NOWSHERA: Three police personnel, including a station clerk and two constables, have gone missing in Nowshera district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with police suspecting they may have been abducted by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to an information report registered by the station house officer (SHO) of Nizam Pur police station, the incident occurred at around 4pm on Thursday.

The missing personnel were identified as clerk Naeemullah and constables Aamir and Noor Islam.

Police launch search operation

The report said the station clerk received a telephone call informing him that suspected militants were present in the mountainous area along the Kohat boundary.

Naeemullah subsequently left for the Piran area near the Kohat boundary in a private car, accompanied by the two constables, to conduct surveillance, according to the report.

At around 6pm, staff from Gambat police station in Kohat district informed the Nizam Pur SHO that personnel deployed at a police picket or mobile unit had been taken away by suspected TTP militants operating in Kohat, the report said.

The incident was reported to senior police officials, while efforts to recover the missing personnel were launched.

Police said a substantial contingent reached the area and conducted a search operation throughout the night. However, the mountainous terrain posed difficulties for the operation.

Additional police and security personnel have since been deployed in the hilly areas along the Nowshera-Kohat boundary, according to police.

Talks under way for recovery

Separately, sources said negotiations between local elders and the TTP had begun in an effort to secure the personnel’s release.

The suspected abduction comes amid a series of attacks targeting police and security personnel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On October 7, four personnel were injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on a police checkpoint in Kohat district.

On September 28, three traffic police personnel were killed and two passers-by injured in a firing incident targeting a traffic police vehicle in Wazirabad, Tank district.

Earlier, a suicide bombing and firing at a checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district on September 26 killed 12 people and injured 35, according to the supplied report.

A suicide bombing at a mosque inside the Old Police Lines in Kohat during Friday prayers on September 16 also killed 15 police personnel and six civilians, while 103 people were injured.

Meanwhile, security forces have continued operations against militants under the Azm-e-Istehkam Vision. According to the supplied report, seven militants were killed in an operation in North Waziristan on Friday.
