The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued the list of 161 political parties registered in the country as per the official record.

The list does not contain the name of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s Awam Pakistan Party.

PTI is on the 79th position on the list; however, the party head’s name has not been mentioned.

According to the ECP’s record, Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui continues to be the MQM-P chief.

Ayaz Latif Palejo’s Qaumi Awami Tehreek is at 89th position on the list, while the TLP is at 97th position; however, the name of the party head is not given.

Two political parties are registered against the name of Pir Pagara Syed Sibghatullah Rashidi: Muslim League-Functional and Grand Democratic Alliance.

ECP hears two cases of PKMAP

Also on Tuesday, the election commission heard two cases related to the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP): the party’s amended constitution and its intra-party elections.

A five-member ECP bench, headed by the chief election commissioner (CEC), heard the cases.

Advocate Aimal Khan Mandokhel, PKMAP’s lawyer, appeared before the bench.

Members of the commission raised objections to the party’s amended constitution, and reminded Mandokhel that a reply had been sought from the party at the last hearing, but the party did not file the reply.

Mandokhel informed the bench that the Balochistan High Court (BHC) had extended the ‘stay’ it had granted in the case of intra-party elections.

The CEC, on the occasion, directed the PKMAP’s lawyer to read out the application he had filed in the court.

However, the lawyer did not have the application with him following which the chief election commissioner ordered him to come with the record next time he appeared before the bench.

The CEC said that the ECP would examine whether the BHC’s ruling was restricted to the PKMAP’s intra-party elections or it would also apply to its constitution. “It appears that the party is not taking the matter seriously,” he said, and added it would have been better if the lawyers had come prepared, or did not appear at all.

The commission decided to give PKMAP last chance to submit its reply in the case of amended constitution.

Later, the hearing was adjourned until October 13.
