United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres will arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday for a visit that will include meetings with senior government officials and visits to key UN and disaster-management facilities.
During his stay in Islamabad, Guterres is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and President Asif Ali Zardari. He is expected to return to New York on Thursday.
The UN chief will also visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he is expected to observe Pakistan’s disaster preparedness and response arrangements following the devastating floods that hit the country in 2022.
Guterres last visited Pakistan in 2022, when he toured flood-affected areas and called for greater international support for the country’s recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
Visit to UNMOGIP headquarters
The UN secretary general is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Islamabad.
UNMOGIP is a UN mission comprising military observers deployed to monitor developments along the Line of Control and report on the situation between India and Pakistan.
US-Iran diplomacy on agenda
The visit is also expected to include discussions on Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran. The UN chief and Pakistani officials are likely to discuss Islamabad’s role in supporting dialogue between the two countries and its efforts to facilitate diplomatic engagement.
