The district administration launched a major crackdown on Saturday, against the use of banned polythene bags in the federal capital, warning violators of strict legal action.
According to the administration, 313 kgs of polythene bags were seized during operations conducted across Islamabad in a single day. As many as 88 shopkeepers were arrested, while nine shops were sealed for violating the ban.
The administration said the action was being taken under the 2023 law prohibiting single-use plastics.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Memon said the ban aims to reduce environmental pollution and protect the city’s natural environment, as plastic bags contribute to pollution, block drains and create sanitation problems.
The deputy commissioner urged shopkeepers to stop selling and providing polythene bags and adopt environment-friendly alternatives. Citizens and traders were also asked to cooperate with the district administration in ensuring the effective implementation of the ban.
