ISLAMABAD: The federal government extended on Saturday the deployment of Rangers in Islamabad and parts of Punjab until October 15 amid security measures ahead of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned long march.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, 3,000 Rangers personnel will remain deployed in Islamabad until Oct. 15. The deployment has also been extended in various districts of Punjab.

Rangers had initially been deployed in Islamabad from September 20 to Oct. 5 in view of the PTI’s planned Sept. 27 long march. The party later postponed the march and announced Oct. 4 as the date for its Islamabad protest.

Rangers to perform assigned duties

Sources said the extension was made at the request of the Islamabad chief commissioner and Punjab Home Department.

The Rangers will perform duties assigned by the Islamabad chief commissioner and the provincial government, according to the sources.

Meanwhile, a second round of talks between the government and the opposition over the PTI’s long march has begun in the Speaker’s Chamber.

Speaking to reporters after arriving at Parliament House to attend the second round, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said the day was important for the Pakistani nation.

He said the PTI had come to the talks to discuss matters and turn the strength of the people into the strength of the state.

PTI reiterates key demands

Raja said the party had already presented its basic demands and would reiterate them during the talks.

“We are demanding the release of prisoners, and we will not compromise on Imran Khan’s health,” he said.

He said the party’s basic demand was access to PTI founder Imran Khan and that it wanted to restore “decency, the Constitution and justice” in the country.

“If they do not agree, then we will stand with the Pakistani nation,” Raja said, adding that people wanted Imran Khan’s release and justice in the country.

The first round of talks was held a day earlier under National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Both sides described the meeting as “positive”.

Government assures compliance with court order

According to sources, both sides presented their demands during the talks.

The PTI demanded permission to meet Imran Khan and implementation of a court order concerning his transfer to hospital.

The government delegation, meanwhile, linked acceptance of the PTI’s demands to the “cancellation or postponement” of the Oct. 4 long march.

The government side also assured the PTI that the court order concerning Imran Khan would be implemented, according to the sources.
