Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the UN General Assembly on Friday that Pakistan would not compromise on the sanctity and security of Islam’s holiest sites, while calling for greater reliance on diplomacy to address regional conflicts.
Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan had chosen peace over conflict and would continue to support negotiations and diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes.
“War is a choice, and peace is also a choice. Pakistan has made its choice,” he said, adding that Islamabad had opted for dialogue rather than confrontation.
Pakistan backs Saudi Arabia
The prime minister strongly condemned recent attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, including an attempted drone attack on Makkah. He said the incident had caused deep concern among Muslims worldwide.
“The sanctity and security of the Holy Mosques is our red line. There will be no compromise,” PM Shehbaz said, reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with the Saudi people.
He also described the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as an arrangement aimed at regional peace and stability rather than directed against any country.
“The alliance of the three countries is not against anyone. It is a collective commitment to defence, stability and peace,” he said.
Pakistan highlights diplomatic role
PM Shehbaz said Pakistan had played a role in efforts to reduce tensions in the region, including bringing Iran and the United States together in Islamabad for talks.
He praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for creating space for diplomacy and also acknowledged the efforts of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
The prime minister said the international community should ensure that key waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, remained open because of their importance to global trade and energy supplies.
Kashmir, water dispute raised
PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s position that the Kashmir dispute should be resolved in accordance with relevant UN resolutions. He said Islamabad would continue supporting the Kashmiri people.
He also criticised India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that any attempt to stop or divert Pakistan’s water would be considered an act of war.
Gaza and regional conflicts
The prime minister called for an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital and expressed solidarity with Palestinians.
He condemned Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as what he described as forced displacement of Palestinians. He also criticised Israeli actions in Lebanon and Syria, saying such developments posed risks to international peace and security.
PM Shehbaz called for an end to religious hatred and expressed concern over rising Islamophobia.
Afghanistan and terrorism
The prime minister urged Afghanistan to fulfil its international obligations and ensure that its territory was not used for terrorism against Pakistan or any other country.
He said Pakistan had suffered enormous human and economic losses in the fight against terrorism, including the loss of around 100,000 lives and an estimated $150 billion in economic damage.
PM Shehbaz also thanked Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt, China and other countries for their diplomatic efforts, and expressed particular appreciation for US President Donald Trump’s role in securing a ceasefire between Pakistan and India.
He concluded by stressing that Pakistan would continue pursuing peace, dialogue and diplomacy and would work to prevent South Asia from returning to a situation of heightened conflict.
