Sukkur: NARI Foundation Policymakers, financial institutions, energy sector experts and civil society representatives gathered in Sukkur on Wednesday to participate in a Public Forum titled “Breaking Free from Imported Fuel: Ensuring Energy Security and Clean Mobility ” to press for two policy measures aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on expensive imported fuel for its power and transport sectors.
The forum was organised by NARI Foundation Sukkur a member of The Grow Green Network in collaboration with Indus Consortium. It was attended by parliamentarians, academics, media persons, civil society representatives, environmental activists, community-based organisations and renewable energy developers.
Speakers Ms.Azra Jamal, Ali Sher Mahar, Rabia Mirza, Anwar Mahar, Saira Lashari , Waseem Raza, recalled that the shortage in regasified LNG has led to price increase since the start of the war in the Middle East. . It has led to a shortfall in power generation, which has forced the government into nighttime load-shedding.
Participants said the transport sector faced a parallel shock, as petrol prices rose more than 50 per cent between late February and early May 2026.
The forum called on the State Bank of Pakistan to announce a dedicated concessional financing policy for electric vehicles, encouraging commercial banks to offer concessional EV loans. It said the policy should support the local retrofitting of existing two and three wheelers, electrification of rickshaw and rider networks, and extend to university students, particularly young women, to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and renewable powered charging infrastructure.
The forum called on the Government of Pakistan to repurpose RLNG based power generation. It is essential in order to eradicate the fuel import burden and financial pressures contributing to the power sector’s circular debt of Rs1.67 trillion. This will ensure affordability and access of electricity for SME’s, Businesses, common people and will act as an impetus for the revival of business and industry to continue the economic engine of Pakistan. The forum urged that public resources should instead be redirected towards indigenous solar and wind power, supported by battery storage and grid modernization for ensuring the long term energy security of Pakistan.
