Kuala Lumpur: A helicopter operated by Malaysia’s Flying Doctor Service crashed near an airport in the state of Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo. Five people, including medical personnel, were reportedly on board.
According to British news agency reports, the helicopter was carrying a pilot and employees of Malaysia’s Ministry of Health. Those on board included a medical officer, an assistant medical officer and nurses.
Malaysian authorities have so far not confirmed any fatalities in the crash.
Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said initial information indicated that ministry personnel were among those aboard. However, the condition of the crew and passengers, as well as the cause of the accident, remains unclear.
Firefighters, emergency responders and medical teams are continuing search and rescue operations at the crash site.
Malaysia’s Flying Doctor Service provides medical care, emergency assistance and other healthcare services to people living in rural and remote areas, where access to conventional medical facilities can be difficult.
