Colombo: Pakistan’s hopes of reaching the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semi-finals remain alive following England’s thrilling 4-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Super 8 stage. The outcome has set up a crucial clash between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which will determine which team advances to the semi-finals alongside England.
In the match at Colombo, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bat first. The Kiwis managed 159 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. England successfully chased the target, reaching 160 with 4 wickets down in the final over, keeping Pakistan’s semi-final chances intact.
Now, the semi-final spot depends on Pakistan’s performance against Sri Lanka in their upcoming match. To surpass New Zealand, which currently holds 3 points and a better net run rate, Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka by a significant margin.
According to estimates, Pakistan will need to beat Sri Lanka by 65 runs to ensure progression to the semi-finals. If Sri Lanka bats first, Pakistan must chase the target within 13 overs to achieve the required net run rate.
It is important to note that England has already qualified for the semi-finals from this group, while Sri Lanka is effectively out of contention. Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka is therefore a must-win scenario, with a substantial margin needed to secure a spot in the last four.
