Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over its reaction to a recent court verdict concerning the jailed former prime minister, Imran Khan, saying the party’s desire to secure relief for its incarcerated leader was reaching “new heights.”
In a post on X, the defence minister said one of the “innumerable founders” of PTI had received what he described as extraordinary relief from the judiciary. Asif said the way the entire party celebrated the verdict reflected its strong desire to see its leader released from jail. He recalled that PTI leaders had previously demanded that political opponents be imprisoned and face difficult conditions in jail.
According to the defence minister, the party was now calling for Imran Khan to be shifted from prison to a hospital, despite previously portraying him as an “invincible” and “iron man.” He said, “Perhaps a bigger U-turn of irony is not possible.”
The defence minister maintained that there was no objection to providing Imran Khan with immediate, effective and comprehensive medical facilities, noting that prisoners had previously received treatment in hospitals. However, he urged PTI to address what he described as contradictions in its political narrative before celebrating the court’s verdict.
Calling the development “the revenge of nature” and “of arrogance,” Asif said the current situation represented a stark contrast with PTI’s earlier political stance. He concluded his post by praying for Imran Khan’s recovery, saying, “I sincerely pray that may Allah heal Imran Khan from all diseases, Amen.”
