Bhati Gate Incident: Decision Taken to Conduct Medical Examination of Deceased Woman’s Husband in Alleged Torture Case

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed strong anger and concern over allegations of torture involving Ghulam Murtaza, the husband of Sadia, the woman who died after falling into a manhole near Bhati Gate in Lahore. The development marks a significant turn in the case, which has already sparked public outrage and raised serious questions about police conduct.

According to police sources, a decision has been made to conduct a medical examination of Ghulam Murtaza to determine the nature and extent of the alleged torture. The medical examination will be carried out under police supervision at a local hospital in Shorkot. Authorities say the examination is aimed at establishing facts through medical evidence and ensuring transparency in the investigation.

The Chief Minister’s reaction came after reports surfaced that Ghulam Murtaza was allegedly subjected to physical abuse while in police custody. Maryam Nawaz reportedly took serious notice of the matter and sought detailed reports from senior police officials. Her strong response reflects the provincial government’s stated policy of zero tolerance toward custodial violence and abuse of authority.

Police officials stated that once the medical report is completed, there is a strong possibility that a formal case may be registered against the police officers found responsible for the alleged torture. The medical findings are expected to play a critical role in determining the next legal steps.

According to police sources, Ghulam Murtaza has accused the Superintendent of Police (SP) City and the Station House Officer (SHO) of subjecting him to torture. He alleged that police officers repeatedly pressured him to confess to the murder of his wife, despite his insistence that her death was an accident.

Ghulam Murtaza has claimed that during interrogation, he was physically assaulted and coerced into making statements that would implicate him in his wife’s death. He maintains that the police attempted to force a false confession, which he refused to provide. These allegations have further intensified scrutiny of the police investigation into the Bhati Gate incident.

The case stems from a tragic incident in which Sadia lost her life after falling into an open manhole in the Bhati Gate area of Lahore. The incident also reportedly involved her child, who survived. The death sparked widespread anger over unsafe infrastructure, uncovered sewerage lines, and official negligence in maintaining public spaces.

Earlier developments in the case had already seen controversy, with reports suggesting that the SP and SHO were nominated as accused in the alleged torture of the deceased woman’s husband. The situation has since evolved into a broader debate over police accountability and the treatment of citizens during investigations.

In a separate statement that gained public attention, Ghulam Murtaza rejected claims that financial compensation could address his loss. “I do not need one crore rupees,” he said. “No amount of money can bring my children their mother back.” His remarks resonated with many and added emotional weight to calls for justice and systemic reform.

Police officials say that internal inquiries are underway to assess the conduct of the officers involved. Senior authorities have assured that the investigation will be impartial and that no one will be allowed to misuse their position. They emphasized that the law applies equally to all, regardless of rank or authority.

Human rights advocates and civil society groups have also weighed in on the matter, calling for an independent inquiry and strict action against those responsible if the allegations are proven. They argue that custodial violence not only violates the law but also erodes public trust in law enforcement institutions.

The Punjab government has reiterated its commitment to holding public officials accountable and ensuring justice for victims. Officials say that the Chief Minister has directed authorities to proceed strictly according to law and to ensure that the truth is brought to light through evidence rather than coercion.

As the investigation continues, the medical examination of Ghulam Murtaza is expected to be a key development. The findings will likely determine whether criminal proceedings are initiated against the accused police officers and may shape the future course of the case.

The Bhati Gate incident has become emblematic of larger issues surrounding public safety, police practices, and accountability. With public attention firmly focused on the case, authorities face mounting pressure to ensure a transparent investigation and to take decisive action against any wrongdoing.
