KARACHI: Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that no vehicle will be allowed to operate on roads across Sindh without a computerized fitness certificate, as the provincial government moves to fully digitize and regulate the transport system.

In a statement, Sharjeel Memon said that the entire motor vehicle system in Sindh has now been computerized, making it mandatory for all vehicles—both public and private—to obtain a computerized fitness certificate before being allowed on the roads. He emphasized that this step has been taken to ensure road safety, improve transport standards, and reduce accidents caused by unfit and poorly maintained vehicles.

“The era of manual and fake fitness certificates is over,” the senior minister said. “From now on, any vehicle operating without a computerized fitness certificate will be considered illegal and will face strict action.”

He explained that the computerized system will help authorities maintain accurate records, improve transparency, and eliminate corruption in the issuance of fitness certificates. According to him, this initiative is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at modernizing Sindh’s transport infrastructure and ensuring public safety.

Sharjeel Memon highlighted that unfit vehicles are a major cause of traffic accidents, air pollution, and traffic congestion in urban centers, particularly in Karachi. By enforcing computerized fitness certification, the government aims to ensure that vehicles meet minimum safety and environmental standards before being allowed on the roads.

The senior minister also spoke about the use of sirens and emergency lights by ambulances. He said that the Sindh Health Department has issued clear instructions to ambulance services regarding when sirens and emergency lights may be used. According to these guidelines, sirens should only be activated while picking up a patient or transporting them to a hospital in an emergency situation.

“Sirens and emergency lights are meant to save lives, not to be misused,” Sharjeel Memon said, adding that unnecessary use of sirens creates panic, traffic disorder, and inconvenience for the public. He warned that action would be taken against ambulance drivers and services found violating these instructions.

On public transport, Sharjeel Memon said that the Sindh Transport Department is actively working on the procurement of new buses to improve commuting facilities for citizens. He revealed that several buses have already arrived and are currently present at the port, while the Sindh government has approved the purchase of an additional 500 buses.

He stated that these buses will be introduced in phases under different transport projects to strengthen the public transport network across the province, particularly in Karachi, Hyderabad, and other major cities. The new buses are expected to be modern, environment-friendly, and equipped with better safety features.

“Providing affordable, safe, and reliable public transport is a top priority of the Sindh government,” he said. “We want every citizen, especially daily wage workers, students, women, and senior citizens, to have access to dignified transport facilities.”

Sharjeel Memon added that improving public transport would also help reduce the number of private vehicles on roads, thereby easing traffic congestion and lowering pollution levels. He said the government is also working on route planning, monitoring systems, and strict enforcement to ensure that public transport operators comply with rules and regulations.

The senior minister reiterated that the provincial government is committed to reforms that directly impact the daily lives of citizens. He said that digitization, transparency, and accountability remain key pillars of the Sindh government’s governance strategy.

He urged vehicle owners and transport operators to cooperate with authorities by ensuring their vehicles meet fitness standards and are properly registered in the computerized system. “These measures are not meant to harass people,” he said, “but to protect lives and improve the overall quality of transport in Sindh.”

With the introduction of computerized fitness certification, stricter ambulance regulations, and the expansion of public transport, the Sindh government aims to move toward a safer, more organized, and modern transport system for the province.
