Pakistani actor and comedian Arslan Naseer has weighed in on the discussion surrounding Durefishan Saleem’s accent, using his usual humour to question the criticism aimed at the actress.

Taking to Instagram, Arslan shared a video with the caption, “What if it is a character requirement? Is the monthly English test going on?” Through the caption, he questioned whether actors should be judged so closely over their English when a particular way of speaking could simply be part of a character.

In the video, Arslan joked about the attention Durefishan’s accent has received. He questioned why people were analysing the way she spoke and took a humorous swipe at those who claim they only watch international shows and have no interest in Pakistani dramas.

Arslan said that some people often talk about watching Netflix and Amazon Prime while claiming they do not follow local dramas. However, when a Pakistani actress speaks English differently, he joked that the same people quickly appear online to discuss her accent.

He also made fun of the idea that everyone should have a particular English accent. Arslan pointed out that people cannot expect every Pakistani actor to sound British and jokingly referred to himself as a local person rather than someone from Britain.

He further questioned why Durefishan’s accent had become such a major topic. According to Arslan, people were putting too much focus on a few lines instead of simply watching the performance.

Towards the end of the video, Arslan added another cheeky remark, saying that, for him, the girl simply needs to be cute and that he does not really care about her accent. The comment appeared to be his humorous way of dismissing the criticism.

Pakistani actress Durefishan Saleem is facing social media criticism over her performance in Dar-e-Nijaat, with viewers questioning her English accent, expressions and suitability for her youthful character, Zaryab. Her pronunciation of the word “fab” has also sparked online discussion.
