Pakistani actor Sheheryar Munawar has found himself at the centre of an online debate after his latest vacation pictures from Spain drew criticism over a visible tattoo, with some social media users questioning the growing trend of tattoos among Pakistani celebrities.
Taking to Instagram, Sheheryar shared a series of snapshots from his Spain getaway with his wife, actress Maheen Siddiqui. While the couple appeared to be enjoying their time abroad, one particular picture featuring Sheheryar at the beach quickly became a talking point among his followers.
However, instead of focusing solely on his vacation, some netizens turned their attention towards the tattoo visible on his body. Several users criticized the choice, particularly highlighting their religious and cultural concerns surrounding tattoos.
One user questioned the growing popularity of tattoos among Pakistani celebrities, writing, “This growing concept of tattoos why why.”
Another remarked, “Why are Muslims promoting tattoos yar? Kyun jaan tang inki? I mean har doosray actor ne tattoo karwaya hua hai kyun? Wajah or karna marna hai to dekhna zaroori kyun hai?”
A third user bluntly stated, “Tattoo is haram for our religion.”
Another critic wrote, “Disgusting. Sharam to aati nahi hai inko! Na haya hai! Ooper se haraam tattoo bhi dikhana hai.”
One more comment read, “It’s such a shameful, what we portray our personality, what we actually are. Tattoos and men’s clothes should be according to Islamic teachings.”
While the criticism gathered attention, Sheheryar’s fans and supporters also came to his defence, with some arguing that his beach attire and personal style were not unusual for a holiday setting.
Interestingly, the online conversation comes at a time when Sheheryar is earning widespread praise for his acting in the currently airing drama ‘Dar-e-Nijaat’.
Written by acclaimed novelist Umera Ahmed, the serial features Sheheryar as Abu Bakar, a character markedly different from his real-life public image. Abu Bakar is portrayed as a simple, soft-spoken and religious man who believes in helping others rather than judging them.
Viewers have particularly appreciated Sheheryar’s restrained performance and his ability to portray the character’s calm and compassionate personality.
