Islamabad:<\/strong> The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of a possible rise in smog and dense fog conditions across various parts of the country in the coming days, urging citizens and relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to minimize health and safety risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to an NDMA spokesperson, major cities of Punjab including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Sheikhupura are likely to experience an increase in smog levels<\/strong>. Weather conditions such as low wind speed, high humidity, and a continued drop in temperatures are contributing to the formation and persistence of smog in these urban centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NDMA alert further states that Rawalpindi and Islamabad<\/strong>, along with several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa<\/strong>, may also witness increased fog and smog intensity. In addition, upper regions of Sindh<\/strong> are expected to face similar conditions, which could disrupt daily life and transportation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to smog can lead to serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems<\/strong>, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and heart disease. The NDMA has advised the public to limit outdoor activities during peak smog hours, especially early mornings and late evenings, when air quality is expected to be at its worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authority has also cautioned that traffic flow in multiple cities may be severely affected<\/strong> due to reduced visibility caused by smog and fog. Motorists have been urged to drive carefully, use fog lights where necessary, maintain safe distances, and avoid unnecessary travel during low-visibility conditions. Earlier, the National Institute of Health (NIH) also issued an advisory highlighting the risk of increased respiratory illnesses due to smog<\/strong>, recommending the use of face masks, staying indoors as much as possible, and keeping windows closed during high-smog periods. Citizens have also been encouraged to use air purifiers where available and maintain hydration to reduce health impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent weeks, provincial governments, particularly in Punjab, have taken several steps to curb smog, including adjusting market timings, regulating industrial emissions, and restricting activities that contribute to air pollution<\/strong>. However, experts warn that long-term solutions require sustained policy implementation and public cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NDMA reiterated its commitment to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to mitigate the effects of smog and protect public health.
