LAHORE: A three-storey residential building collapsed in Lahore\u2019s Baghbanpura area on Wednesday night, killing 11 people and injuring six, rescue officials said, as emergency teams continued searching through the debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lahore Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said 17 people were pulled from the rubble. Seven were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining victims were taken to hospital. He later said four more people died of their injuries, taking the death toll to 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ahmad said four critically injured people \u2014 Saniya Bibi, Sehar Bibi, Zahid and Sabir Ali \u2014 were under treatment at Services Hospital, while two others had been discharged. He added, “Rescue 1122 is only aware of people recovered from the collapsed building and is unsure how many people were actually present at the time of the incident.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deceased were identified as Shahida Bibi, 45, wife of Muhammad Shahid; Samina Bibi, 45, wife of Abbas Ali; Mujahid, 22, son of Shahid; Hamid, 7, son of Abbas; Komal, daughter of Abbas; Hasnain, 10, son of Shahid; Neelam, 10, daughter of Abbas; Ahad Ali, 22, son of Shahid Ali; Ayesha Bibi, 18; Naseem Bibi, 72, wife of the late Meraj; and Mehak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police said the collapse occurred at around 10:15pm in Kotli Pir Abdul Rehman, where three families were living in the dilapidated house. Officials have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and whether negligence or building safety violations played a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of life. On her instructions, the Lahore commissioner visited both the hospital and the collapse site late at night and met survivors. PML-N MPA Malik Waheed also went to the area and assured affected families that assistance would be provided in the rescue effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident comes weeks after another deadly collapse in Lahore. On June 30, at least 14 children were killed when the roof of a private tuition centre operating in a dilapidated building fell in Kahna. After that incident, the chief minister ordered an immediate safety audit of school buildings in densely populated parts of Punjab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest collapse has come during the monsoon season, when structurally weak buildings have repeatedly turned deadly.
