{"id":8226,"date":"2026-07-29T10:25:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T10:25:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=8226"},"modified":"2026-07-29T10:25:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T10:25:54","slug":"australia-calls-for-larger-squads-at-icc-mens-cricket-world-cup-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=8226","title":{"rendered":"Australia Calls for Larger Squads at ICC Men&#8217;s Cricket World Cup 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Melbourne:<\/strong> Defending world champions <strong>Australia<\/strong> have called on the <strong>International Cricket Council (ICC)<\/strong> to increase the maximum squad size for the <strong>2027 ICC Men&#8217;s Cricket World Cup<\/strong> from <strong>15 to 17 players<\/strong>, citing the tournament&#8217;s expanded format and the challenges of managing injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia&#8217;s proposal comes as the 2027 World Cup is expected to require the finalists to play <strong>13 matches<\/strong>, compared with <strong>11 matches<\/strong> for the finalists at the <strong>2023 Cricket World Cup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the tournament format, a team reaching the final would play:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Five group-stage matches<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Six Super Seven matches<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One semi-final<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>One final<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on the issue, Australia head coach <strong>Andrew McDonald<\/strong> said a 15-player squad can become difficult to manage if one or two players are carrying injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When one or two players in a 15-member squad are dealing with injuries, team selection becomes much more challenging,&#8221; McDonald said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also pointed to the logistical difficulties associated with hosting tournaments across large geographical areas, arguing that expanding squad sizes would give teams greater flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If the tournament is being played across distant venues, logistical challenges also arise. In that situation, the number of players in the squad should be increased,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonald compared cricket with football, noting that <strong>FIFA allows national teams to name squads of up to 26 players<\/strong>, despite only <strong>11 players<\/strong> being on the field at any one time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also highlighted that the <strong>2022 FIFA World Cup-winning Spain team<\/strong> played <strong>eight matches<\/strong>, suggesting that larger squad sizes have become common in major international sporting events to help teams cope with demanding schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia believes increasing the World Cup squad size from <strong>15 to 17 players<\/strong> would help teams better manage injuries, player workload, and travel demands during the expanded tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>ICC has not announced any decision<\/strong> on Australia&#8217;s proposal.
