Regulators said this practice reduced consumer choice and harmed fair competition in the digital marketplace.

“The company unlawfully leveraged its dominant position in online search to restrict competition,” the Commission said, adding that such conduct is prohibited under EU law.

Violation of the Digital Markets Act

The European Commission stated that the Digital Markets Act requires large technology companies, known as “gatekeepers,” to treat their own services and those of competitors fairly. The legislation is designed to prevent major digital platforms from abusing their market power and to create a level playing field for businesses operating in the European Union.

Regulators also accused Google of unfairly restricting app developers from informing users about alternative payment methods outside the Google Play Store.

According to the Commission, Google prevented developers from directing customers to external payment options that could reduce or eliminate Google’s service fees. Officials said this practice also violates the Digital Markets Act by limiting competition and consumer choice.

Google Given 60 Days to Comply

The Commission ordered Google to comply with the ruling within 60 days. Failure to implement the required changes could result in additional financial penalties.

European officials stressed that the ruling aims to restore fair competition rather than punish innovation, emphasizing that dominant technology companies must follow the same competition rules as other businesses.

Google Responds

Google rejected the Commission’s conclusions, arguing that the decision would ultimately harm European consumers.

In a statement, the company said the ruling could make it more difficult for users to find relevant services and reduce the quality of products available across its platforms. Google did not immediately indicate whether it would appeal the decision.

Potential Trade Tensions

The latest enforcement action is expected to add further strain to trade relations between the European Union and the United States.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has previously criticized European regulatory actions against American technology companies, describing some EU digital policies as unfair and warning that Washington could consider retaliatory measures.

Analysts say the latest fine may become another point of disagreement between Brussels and Washington as both sides continue discussions on trade, technology regulation, and digital competition.

Long History of EU Cases Against Google

This is not the first time Google has faced significant antitrust penalties from the European Union.

In 2017, the European Commission fined Google $2.8 billion for abusing its dominance in online search by favoring its shopping comparison service over competitors. The company’s final appeal against that decision was later rejected.

In 2018, Google received another record penalty of $4.7 billion over practices related to its Android mobile operating system. EU regulators concluded that the company had used Android to strengthen the dominance of its search engine and browser services. Google’s final appeal in that case was also dismissed.

The latest €890 million ($1 billion) fine demonstrates the European Union’s continued efforts to enforce strict competition rules against major technology firms. The case also highlights the growing global debate over the market power of large digital platforms and the balance between innovation, consumer protection, and fair competition.

BRUSSELS: The European Commission has imposed a €890 million ($1 billion) fine on Google, accusing the tech giant of illegally abusing its dominant position in..

[11

post-7172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-science
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1.jpg",700,400,false
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1-300x171.jpg",300,171,true
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1.jpg",700,400,false
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1.jpg",700,400,false],"1536x1536":["https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1.jpg",700,400,false],"2048x2048":["https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/438600_9199945_updates-1.jpg",700,400,false
admin
["GET
