BRUSSELS:<\/strong> The European Commission has imposed a \u20ac890 million ($1 billion)<\/strong> fine on Google, accusing the tech giant of illegally abusing its dominant position in the online search market to favor its own services over those of competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the Commission said Google used its leading search engine to unfairly promote its own products and services while suppressing rival platforms, violating the European Union’s competition rules and the Digital Markets Act (DMA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Commission, Google gave preferential treatment to its own shopping, travel, gaming, and other online services<\/strong> by placing them prominently in search results, while pushing competing services lower in rankings. Regulators said this practice reduced consumer choice and harmed fair competition in the digital marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The company unlawfully leveraged its dominant position in online search to restrict competition,” the Commission said, adding that such conduct is prohibited under EU law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Violation of the Digital Markets Act<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The European Commission stated that the Digital Markets Act requires large technology companies, known as “gatekeepers,” to treat their own services and those of competitors fairly.
