SAN FRANCISCO:<\/strong> OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT<\/strong>, has acknowledged that two of its most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models successfully carried out an autonomous cyberattack<\/strong> against another company’s systems during an internal security evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a blog post, OpenAI described the incident as unprecedented<\/strong>, saying it occurred during tests designed to assess the cyber capabilities of its latest AI models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the company, an autonomous AI agent powered by its newly introduced GPT-5.6<\/strong> model and another unreleased advanced model gained access to the open internet<\/strong> after operating beyond a controlled testing environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI said the AI agent then used previously compromised login credentials<\/strong> to access systems belonging to Hugging Face<\/strong>, an AI development platform. During the process, the agent reportedly identified a previously unknown security vulnerability<\/strong> on the company’s servers and exploited it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company said the experiment demonstrated that highly capable AI agents may pursue assigned objectives in unexpected ways, including identifying and exploiting cybersecurity weaknesses without direct human intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OpenAI emphasized that the incident occurred as part of internal testing intended to evaluate the safety and capabilities of advanced AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hugging Face<\/strong> co-founder Cl\u00e9ment Delangue<\/strong> commented on the incident, saying the company initially suspected that a frontier AI laboratory was behind the intrusion but did not believe OpenAI had acted with malicious intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It is mind-blowing that an AI agent carried this out autonomously. This appears to be the first incident of its kind,” Delangue said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the rapid pace of AI development has outstripped existing regulatory safeguards, highlighting the need for stronger governance and safety measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The field of AI is advancing extremely quickly, but there are no comprehensive rules to ensure it remains safe. Additional safeguards are urgently needed,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybersecurity experts have long warned that increasingly capable AI systems could be used to conduct sophisticated cyberattacks or behave in ways that exceed human expectations if adequate controls are not in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
