{"id":6740,"date":"2025-10-13T15:11:56","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T15:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=6740"},"modified":"2025-10-13T15:11:57","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T15:11:57","slug":"frances-macron-wont-resign-as-no-confidence-votes-threaten-his-new-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=6740","title":{"rendered":"France\u2019s Macron won\u2019t resign, as no-confidence votes threaten his new government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron rejected calls to resign and blasted his opponents on Monday, as his latest government was threatened by two no-confidence motions that could bring it down by the end of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France is in the midst of its worst political crisis in decades as a succession of minority governments seek to push deficit-reducing budgets through a truculent legislature split into three distinct ideological blocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron has burned through five prime ministers in less than two years, and many of his rivals have said the only way out of the crisis is for the president to call fresh legislative elections or resign, both of which he has refused to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1948672\/frances-macron-wont-resign-as-no-confidence-votes-threaten-his-new-government#shrinking-confidence\"><\/a>Shrinking confidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after arriving in Egypt on Monday to attend a meeting to end the fighting in Gaza, Macron was defiant, blaming his rivals for destabilising France and saying he had no plans to step down before his second and final term ends in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI ensure continuity and stability, and I will continue to do so,\u201d he said, urging people not to forget that the mandate given to the president means \u201cto serve, to serve and to serve\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, Macron&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1948013\/lecornu-back-as-frances-pm-days-after-stepping-down\">reappointed<\/a>&nbsp;Sebastien Lecornu, who had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1946986\">resigned<\/a>&nbsp;as prime minister earlier in the week. Macron\u2019s office announced Lecornu\u2019s new cabinet late on Sunday, with many of the top jobs remaining unchanged, despite the prime minister\u2019s pledge to name ministers who embody \u201crenewal and diversity\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the hard-left \u201cFrance Unbowed\u201dparty and the far-right National Rally filed no-confidence motions today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lecornu will face a no-confidence vote most likely on Thursday. It\u2019s unclear if he has the votes needed to survive, as the Socialists \u2014 whose support he will almost certainly need to fight on \u2014 are keeping their options open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Socialists want Lecornu to repeal Macron\u2019s pension reform and roll out a billionaires tax, measures the right outright rejects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will be no censure if the prime minister commits to abandoning Article 49.3 and suspending the pension reform,\u201d Socialist lawmaker Philippe Brun told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>, referring to the constitutional tool used to ram legislation through parliament without a vote, and echoing remarks by the party\u2019s secretary Olivier Faure on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lecornu, already France\u2019s shortest serving prime minister with a first term that lasted just 27 days, has not ruled out resigning again if he cannot fulfill his mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RN party president Jordan Bardella, asked on&nbsp;<em>TF1 TV<\/em>&nbsp;whether he would support a motion by the hard-left, said: \u201cI\u2019m not a sectarian \u2026 I believe that France\u2019s interest today is to ensure that Emmanuel Macron is stopped in his tracks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1948672\/frances-macron-wont-resign-as-no-confidence-votes-threaten-his-new-government#budget-pressure\"><\/a>Budget pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly appointed cabinet meets for a first time on Monday afternoon and must present a budget by Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France has the euro zone\u2019s largest deficit, and Macron has tasked a string of prime ministers with passing slimmed-down budgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michel Barnier was the first to try, but he was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1876803\">toppled<\/a>&nbsp;by parliament last December for his proposed budget cuts to the 2025 budget.
