{"id":6684,"date":"2025-10-12T13:01:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T13:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=6684"},"modified":"2025-10-12T13:01:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T13:01:28","slug":"pakistan-achieves-first-successful-corneal-transplant-from-female-donor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=6684","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan achieves first successful corneal transplant from female donor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two soldiers regain sight after AFIO surgeons perform Pakistan\u2019s first female-donor corneal transplant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/assets\/uploads\/updates\/2025-10-11\/628077_7279117_updates.jpeg\" alt=\"This representational image shows doctors performing an operation. \u2014 Unsplash\/File\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This representational image shows doctors performing an operation. \u2014 Unsplash\/File<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PINDI: Pakistan has achieved a medical milestone with the country\u2019s first successful corneal transplant from a female donor, restoring sight to two soldiers who had lost their vision during counter-terrorism operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The corneas were donated to the Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO) in accordance with the will of the late wife of Major General (Retd) Zafar Mehdi Askari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialist surgeons from the Pakistan Army performed the transplants on 30-year-old soldier Aliullah and 26-year-old soldier Falak Sher, successfully restoring their eyesight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The achievement marks a significant step forward in Pakistan\u2019s medical field and underscores the growing potential of organ donation in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The donor\u2019s daughter, Zehra Mehdi, expressed immense pride in her mother\u2019s act of generosity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe greatest honour is that my mother\u2019s eyes were donated to two brave soldiers,\u201d she said, describing the transplant as \u201ca source of eternal charity (sadaqah-e-jariyah)\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AFIO\u2019s pioneering surgical procedure to restore vision has been hailed as a historic and commendable medical accomplishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts, however, continue to warn of the scarcity of organ donations in the country due to social misconceptions. In Pakistan, as many as 10 to 15 people die every day due to the unavailability of organs, a number that reaches up to 20 in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical professionals have called for urgent reforms to promote both living and posthumous donations while exploring the potential of xenotransplantation (animal-to-human organ transfers) to address the growing crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the rising number of patients suffering from organ failure, cultural taboos and religious hesitation continue to prevent many Pakistanis from donating organs, leaving thousands waiting, and often dying, for a second chance at life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two soldiers regain sight after AFIO surgeons perform Pakistan\u2019s first female-donor corneal transplant PINDI: Pakistan has achieved a medical milestone with the country\u2019s first successful corneal transplant from a female donor, restoring sight to two soldiers who had lost their vision during counter-terrorism operations.
