KARACHI:<\/strong> The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its monsoon outlook<\/strong> for the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalayan mountain ranges<\/strong>, warning that above-normal temperatures and seasonal rainfall could increase the risk of flooding and other weather-related hazards in northern Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the PMD, near-normal monsoon rainfall<\/strong> is expected across the country’s northern regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While rainfall is forecast to remain close to seasonal averages, meteorologists cautioned that temperatures in the Hindu Kush, Karakoram, and Himalayan ranges are likely to remain above normal<\/strong> during the monsoon period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department warned that the warmer conditions could accelerate the melting of glaciers and snow<\/strong>, increasing water flows in rivers and streams and raising the possibility of flood-like situations<\/strong> in vulnerable areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The PMD also highlighted additional hazards associated with the monsoon season in mountainous regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy rainfall may trigger landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls<\/strong> in hilly terrain, posing risks to transportation networks, local communities, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In higher-altitude and environmentally sensitive areas, the department warned of the possibility of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs)<\/strong>, which occur when water from glacier-fed lakes is suddenly released due to the failure of natural ice or moraine dams. Such events can generate destructive flash floods downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the potential for flooding, the Meteorological Department has advised people living near rivers, streams, and seasonal waterways<\/strong> to remain vigilant and closely monitor weather forecasts and official advisories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have also urged local administrations and disaster management agencies to stay prepared for possible emergency situations resulting from heavy rainfall, glacier melt, or flash floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monsoon outlook comes as Pakistan enters its annual rainy season, when mountain regions often face multiple weather-related challenges, including flooding, landslides, and disruptions to road connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
