Lahore:<\/strong> Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz<\/strong> has announced the introduction of a new housing initiative, \u201cApna Ghar, Mehfooz Ghar\u201d (My Home, Safe Home)<\/strong>, aimed at preventing building collapse incidents such as the recent Kahna tragedy<\/strong> by helping homeowners strengthen unsafe and dilapidated structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials approved the addition of the \u201cApna Ghar, Mehfooz Ghar\u201d<\/strong> category to the province\u2019s flagship \u201cApni Chhat, Apna Ghar\u201d (My Roof, My Home)<\/strong> housing programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rs217.8 Billion Allocated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

During the briefing, officials informed the chief minister that Rs217.8 billion<\/strong> has been allocated for the \u201cApni Chhat, Apna Ghar\u201d programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting also approved interest-free, easy-installment loans<\/strong> for more than 180,000 homeless families<\/strong>, enabling eligible beneficiaries to build or acquire homes under the government’s housing initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Financial Assistance for Unsafe Homes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to an official statement, homeowners with dilapidated or structurally unsafe houses<\/strong> will be eligible to receive Rs500,000<\/strong> to strengthen and make their homes safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, families wishing to construct a new house or add an additional floor<\/strong> will be able to obtain interest-free loans of up to Rs1 million<\/strong>, repayable through easy installments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government said the measures are intended to improve housing safety while making home construction more affordable for low-income families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CM Stresses Better Governance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the meeting, Maryam Nawaz said the Punjab government would assist citizens in reinforcing weak or unsafe buildings to reduce the risk of future structural failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She emphasized that no negligence would be tolerated<\/strong> in the implementation of the provincial government’s flagship development projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chief minister also directed officials not to impose additional financial burdens on low-income citizens or make the loan application process more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn times of crisis, good governance is demonstrated through practical action rather than statements,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative follows public concern over the Kahna building collapse<\/strong>, which renewed attention to the safety of aging and poorly constructed residential buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
