ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India on Wednesday exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen held in each other\u2019s custody under the bilateral Agreement on Consular Access, with Islamabad renewing its call for the release of Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exchange, carried out through diplomatic channels, is a biannual obligation under the agreement signed between the two countries in 2008. Pakistan handed over its list to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, while India shared its list with Pakistani authorities, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Foreign Office said Pakistan provided a list of 250 Indian prisoners in its custody, comprising 52 civilian prisoners and 198 fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India, in turn, shared a list of 439 Pakistani or presumed Pakistani prisoners held in its jails. These include 386 civilian prisoners and 53 fishermen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the Agreement on Consular Access, signed on May 21, 2008, Pakistan and India are required to exchange comprehensive lists of prisoners in each other\u2019s custody on January 1 and July 1 every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Foreign Office said Pakistan had urged India to immediately release and repatriate 97 Pakistani prisoners who had completed their sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Islamabad also called on New Delhi to ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Pakistani prisoners lodged in Indian jails and to provide consular access without delay to all prisoners believed to be Pakistani nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad, the government said it would continue to pursue the early repatriation of all Pakistani prisoners held in India through diplomatic channels.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
