The Punjab Assembly on Wednesday completed its scheduled agenda and was adjourned until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday following a heated exchange between treasury and opposition members during proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The session was chaired by the Panel of Chairmen member Samiullah Khan, who adjourned the House after completion of the day’s business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proceedings witnessed tense moments when Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman and opposition lawmaker Shoaib Amir traded sharp remarks and warnings while debating political issues and law-and-order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his speech, Shoaib Amir said that if opposition members faced oppression during a future government led by his party, their parliamentary leader would resign. He further stated that if political workers were subjected to violence similar to what they had allegedly experienced, he would also resign. His remarks triggered loud protests and desk-thumping from treasury members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At one point, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan intervened and attempted to calm the situation after the exchange became increasingly heated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to the opposition member’s comments, Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said the government had no desire to harm political opponents and emphasized that political differences should remain within democratic limits. However, he also strongly criticized the opposition over the events of May 9 and accused its leadership of benefiting from past political support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The finance minister maintained that law enforcement and policing in Punjab had improved significantly under the current government. He claimed that the province had witnessed a 60 percent reduction in crime and said the Safe City project had been expanded across Punjab to improve public security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the tense political exchanges, the assembly continued its budgetary business and approved several financial demands. The House approved local government-related demands amounting to Rs115.186 billion as well as additional demands worth Rs314 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In total, the Punjab Assembly approved 10 budgetary demands worth Rs270.053 billion, while five opposition cut motions were rejected by the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
