North Korea said Sunday its status as a nuclear weapons state was \u201cirreversible\u201d and key to ensuring regional stability, rejecting calls by the United States and its allies for denuclearisation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyongyang has repeatedly insisted it will not abandon its nuclear arsenal, portraying it as essential to deterrence, with Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un calling the policy a \u201cline of no retreat\u201d earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The North\u2019s statement came after a trilateral meeting between South Korea, Japan and the United States in Tokyo on Friday, at which the allies reaffirmed their commitment to the \u201ccomplete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula\u201d, according to Seoul\u2019s foreign ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe US and its vassal forces\u2019 meaningless rhetoric against the DPRK\u2026 can never affect the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state,\u201d the unnamed spokesperson said in a statement published by the official Korean Central News Agency on Sunday, using the acronym for the North\u2019s official name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe \u2018denuclearisation\u2019 is an irreversibly finalised matter,\u201d the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson also cited Washington\u2019s sales of weapons systems to Seoul and Tokyo as justification for Pyongyang\u2019s pursuit of its nuclear programme, describing it as \u201d a strong security guarantee for regional stability and peace\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo matter how hard the US, Japan and the ROK may quibble, they will never change the present position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state,\u201d the official said, referring to the South by the acronym of its official name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korea has accelerated its nuclear weapons programme since talks with Washington broke down in 2019, when a summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Hanoi ended without agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a possible reference to the failed negotiations, the spokesperson said \u201cno one can recover the \u2018denuclearisation\u2019 permanently missed in the trend of the times\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kim recently hosted China\u2019s President Xi Jinping in Pyongyang, after the Chinese leader held back-to-back summits in Beijing with Trump and Putin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
