Set to Form Government in Gilgit-Baltistan After Understanding with PML-N

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan after a reported understanding between the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that the single largest party should be given the opportunity to form the administration.

The development followed a telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, during which the two leaders discussed the outcome of the recent Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections.

Ishaq Dar Congratulates Bilawal

According to sources, Ishaq Dar congratulated Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on the PPP’s performance in the elections and acknowledged the party’s success in emerging as the largest political force in the region.

During the conversation, both leaders reportedly agreed that the party securing the highest number of seats should be allowed to form the government.

The understanding is being viewed as an important step toward political stability in Gilgit-Baltistan following the election results.

Agreement on Future Consultations

The two leaders also agreed that representatives of both parties would continue consultations on matters relating to Gilgit-Baltistan.

Sources indicated that future discussions may focus on governance, administrative cooperation, and the formation of a stable political setup in the region.

Prime Minister Also Congratulated PPP Leadership

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reportedly congratulated President Asif Ali Zardari on the PPP’s electoral performance in Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to sources, the prime minister remarked with a smile that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had run a better election campaign than his rivals.

President Zardari is said to have responded humorously, saying, “After all, whose son is he?”

Election Numbers Favor PPP

According to unofficial and non-final election results, the PPP has emerged as the largest party in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.

The reported seat distribution is as follows:

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP): 10 seats

Independent candidates: 7 seats

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N): 6 seats

The assembly consists of 24 seats, and a party or coalition requires 13 seats to secure a majority and form the government.

Coalition Possibilities

Although PPP has emerged as the largest party, it still falls short of the majority threshold and will likely need support from independent members or other political forces to secure control of the assembly.

Political analysts believe that the reported understanding with PML-N could facilitate a smoother government formation process and reduce the likelihood of prolonged political uncertainty.

Awaiting Official Announcement

While the election results remain unofficial, the emerging political consensus suggests that PPP is in a strong position to lead the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Formal discussions regarding coalition arrangements, support from independent candidates, and key leadership positions are expected in the coming days before the final government formation process is completed.

If the current understanding holds, the PPP would return to power in Gilgit-Baltistan with the backing of the region’s largest electoral mandate and a cooperative approach from its federal coalition partner, PML-N.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan after a reported understanding between
