The surge has made August the most violent month in over ten years, surpassing records set since February 2014.

Deadliest Wave in a Decade

The PICSS report documented 143 militant attacks in August, resulting in 294 fatalities. Among the dead were 73 security personnel, 62 civilians, and one pro-government peace committee member, while 158 militants were also killed in retaliatory operations. In addition, 231 people were injured—including 129 security officials, 92 civilians, eight militants, and two peace committee members. Militants also abducted 10 individuals during this period.

When compared with July 2025, the month recorded a 100% rise in security personnel deaths, a 145% increase in injuries, and a significant spike in both civilian and militant casualties.

Balochistan: Record Militant Losses Since 2015

Balochistan experienced 28 attacks that left 52 people dead (23 security personnel, 21 civilians, and eight militants) and 45 others injured. Security forces launched counter-operations that killed 50 militants, marking the highest monthly militant death toll since June 2015. Intelligence-based actions dismantled BLA and BLF camps, capturing several key commanders.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Epicenter of Violence

The gravest escalation occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), especially in the former tribal districts. The region witnessed 51 militant attacks—a 200% surge—leading to 74 deaths, a 124% increase. In the settled districts of KP, 55 attacks caused 56 deaths. Security forces killed 24 militants and arrested 16, yet violence in these districts rose sharply: 53% more attacks, 60% higher fatalities, and 153% more injuries compared to July.

Overall, KP recorded 106 attacks in August, the highest monthly figure in a decade. Military operations were launched in Bajaur and North Waziristan, targeting and destroying militant hideouts, but the security situation remains tense.

Foiled Terror Plot in Islamabad

A major breakthrough was reported in the federal capital where the Intelligence Bureau (IB) foiled a potential high-profile suicide attack. Security forces arrested a would-be bomber and his handler, effectively thwarting a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) plot aimed at Islamabad.

Sindh and Punjab: Lower but Notable Activity

Sindh reported six militant incidents in August, resulting in six civilian deaths and the martyrdom of two security personnel. Security operations in Karachi led to the arrest of 11 militants.

In Punjab, only two incidents were recorded: a TTP assault in Dera Ghazi Khan and the targeted killing of a young religious scholar in Rawalpindi. These resulted in two deaths—a civilian and a militant.

Alarming Trends for National Security

The PICSS report underscores a dangerous trajectory for Pakistan’s internal security, warning that the scale and spread of violence in August indicate a major resurgence of militant activity nationwide. With KP and Balochistan bearing the brunt, security forces remain under immense pressure to contain the threat, while intelligence agencies have stepped up operations to intercept plots before execution.

Islamabad – Pakistan witnessed a dramatic escalation in militant violence during August 2025, with terror-related incidents soaring by 74% compared to July, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).
