Islamabad:<\/strong> Pakistan has recorded a significant increase in mobile phone imports during the current fiscal year, with total imports exceeding Rs455 billion in the first ten months, according to official documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest figures show that the country imported mobile phones worth more than Rs455.73 billion<\/strong> from July 2025 to April 2026, reflecting a sharp rise in dependence on imported smartphones and mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to government data, mobile phone imports increased by 30.29 percent<\/strong> during the ten-month period compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. During July 2024 to April 2025, Pakistan had imported mobile phones worth approximately Rs349.77 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The continued growth in imports indicates strong consumer demand for smartphones despite economic pressures, inflation, and currency fluctuations. Industry analysts believe the increasing reliance on digital communication, online business activities, e-commerce, and social media usage has continued to drive demand for newer mobile devices across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official document further revealed that on a yearly basis, mobile phone imports in April 2026<\/strong> alone increased by 40.71 percent<\/strong> compared to April 2025. On a monthly basis, imports rose by 18.70 percent<\/strong> in April compared to March 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan imported mobile phones worth approximately Rs49.41 billion<\/strong> in April 2026, whereas imports during March 2026 stood at around Rs41.63 billion<\/strong>. In comparison, mobile phone imports in April 2025 were recorded at about Rs35.12 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data reflects a consistent upward trend in the country\u2019s mobile phone market, particularly in the smartphone segment, where consumers are increasingly upgrading devices to access faster internet services, digital banking applications, online education platforms, and entertainment services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts say the rapid expansion of 4G internet usage and growing expectations regarding future 5G technology are also encouraging consumers to purchase more advanced smartphones. In addition, online work opportunities, freelancing, and digital content creation have increased the need for better mobile devices among young Pakistanis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan remains heavily dependent on imported mobile phones despite efforts to promote local assembly and manufacturing under the government\u2019s mobile device manufacturing policy. Over the past few years, several international and local companies have established assembly plants in Pakistan, producing smartphones and feature phones domestically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, analysts note that a large portion of high-end and premium smartphones still relies on imports due to technological limitations and market demand for international brands. The increasing imports also suggest that consumers continue to prefer globally recognized smartphone manufacturers offering advanced features and better performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rise in imports may also put additional pressure on Pakistan\u2019s foreign exchange reserves, particularly at a time when the country is trying to manage its trade deficit and reduce dependence on imported goods. Mobile phones are considered one of the major contributors to Pakistan\u2019s import bill in the electronics sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the growing smartphone market is contributing positively to Pakistan\u2019s digital economy. Increased smartphone penetration has supported the expansion of digital payments, online shopping, ride-hailing services, e-learning, telemedicine, and mobile-based businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, authorities also revised customs valuation rules for used mobile phones, a move expected to reduce prices for several smartphone models and make imported devices relatively more affordable for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Economists believe that while rising mobile imports reflect increasing digital adoption and consumer demand, the government may need to further strengthen local manufacturing capabilities to reduce import dependency and support the domestic technology sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
