KARACHI: Nine people were killed and four others injured when an oxygen cylinder exploded inside an ambulance in Tharparkar\u2019s Nagarparkar area in Sindh, police and rescue officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ambulance was transporting patients from the People\u2019s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) Hospital in Dano Dhandhal to Mithi when the explosion occurred, according to police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cylinder reportedly exploded when the ambulance staff attempted to administer oxygen to the patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescue officials said two women and several men, including Jaswant, Ishaq Thebo, Pandhi Rajar and Dhano Meghwar, were among those killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The injured were taken to Civil Hospital Mithi for treatment. One of them died while being transferred to Hyderabad for further medical care, according to the information provided by rescue officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tharparkar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) said the explosion completely destroyed the ambulance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that specialists would be engaged to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the loss of life and called for an immediate and transparent investigation to establish the cause of the explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also directed authorities to strengthen safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He directed the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate and transparent investigation and submit a report. He also ordered a review of safety arrangements in government ambulances and medical facilities to ensure effective measures were taken to prevent such accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cylinder explosions involving vehicles, passenger vans and buses have caused fatalities and injuries in Pakistan in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On July 8, 2023, seven people were killed and 14 injured when a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder exploded in a passenger van on Kot Momin Road in Bhalwal tehsil of Punjab\u2019s Sargodha district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On October 15, 2023, two women were killed and two other people injured when a gas cylinder exploded inside a vehicle in Islamabad\u2019s F-7 sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More recently, six people were killed and 38 injured in an explosion<\/a> involving an LPG-filled tanker in Multan on January 27, 2025.
