LAHORE: The Punjab government\u2019s decision to grant three months of summer vacations in educational institutions has been challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petition was filed by the All Pakistan Private Schools Association, which argued that extended school closures would negatively affect students\u2019 education and reduce the already limited academic calendar in Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to court details, Justice Khalid Ishaq is scheduled to hear the petition on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petition names the Punjab government, the School Education Department, and other relevant authorities as respondents in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petitioner stated that the Punjab government had issued a notification announcing three months of summer vacations for educational institutions across the province. The association argued that Pakistan\u2019s academic year has already been reduced to around 120 days, which is significantly shorter compared to many developed countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petition pointed out that countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom generally maintain academic years lasting approximately 230 days, allowing students to receive more comprehensive educational instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the petitioner, shutting down schools for three months would seriously affect students\u2019 learning, academic continuity, and overall educational standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The association requested the court to declare the government\u2019s notification regarding three-month summer vacations null and void.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The petitioner further urged the court to direct authorities to limit summer holidays to six to eight weeks instead of the proposed three-month period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Education experts have long debated the balance between protecting students from extreme weather conditions and maintaining sufficient instructional days in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Punjab experiences intense heat during summer months, and authorities often announce extended vacations due to rising temperatures and concerns over student health and safety. However, private school representatives argue that prolonged closures can result in learning gaps, academic delays, and difficulties in syllabus completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The issue has gained significant attention among parents, teachers, and school administrators, particularly as concerns continue over declining educational standards and interruptions to academic schedules caused by weather conditions and other challenges in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lahore High Court is expected to examine whether the provincial government\u2019s decision is reasonable and in line with educational interests and constitutional principles regarding access to education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
