Punjab Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has taken notice of the alleged use of children for manual labour at Sarai Mughal Mustafai Model School in Pattoki.

Images circulating on social media supposedly showed children performing manual labor within the school premises, prompting the education minister to seek an explanation from the school administration.

Following the minister’s notice, the Deputy District Education Officer (DDEO) Pattoki directed the administration of Mustafai Model School, Hakim Wala Bazaar, to submit a written explanation and appear in person before the relevant office with its records.

The school administration has been warned that action will be taken under the rules against those found responsible if it fails to provide a satisfactory explanation.

The incident has also raised concerns over the treatment of children in educational institutions, where students are expected to study in a safe and dignified environment rather than perform work that may compromise their education, safety, or wellbeing.

Punjab’s child labor law sets 15 as the minimum age for employment in establishments and restricts hazardous work for adolescents. The Punjab Restriction on Employment of Children Act, 2016, also provides penalties for employing or permitting a child under 15 to work in an establishment.

Beyond the legal question, the alleged use of students for manual labor raises an ethical concern about the responsibility of schools to protect children from exploitation. Any work assigned to students should be assessed carefully to ensure it is not being used as a substitute for institutional staff or placing children in situations that interfere with their education or dignity.

The allegations against the school remain subject to the inquiry, and the administration will have an opportunity to present its explanation and records before any action is taken.
