Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has said Pakistan will assume the chairmanship of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Programme in 2027 and host the 26th CAREC Ministerial Conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Addressing the 25th CAREC Ministerial Conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Iqbal called for transforming CAREC transport routes into next-generation economic corridors by integrating infrastructure, logistics, digital connectivity, energy cooperation and climate resilience.The 25th ministerial conference is being held in Ulaanbaatar from September 29 to October 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iqbal said CAREC Corridors 5 and 6 offered Pakistan an opportunity to connect Central Asian markets with the Arabian Sea and generate greater economic activity along the routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the focus should move beyond simply enabling trucks to travel through the corridors and towards ensuring that businesses can use them reliably, competitively and profitably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister said this would require upgrading CAREC roads, modernising border facilities at Torkham and Chaman, strengthening rail freight capacity through the proposed ML-1 upgrade and improving connections with dry ports and seaports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Iqbal stressed the importance of developing a digital corridor across the CAREC region, saying Pakistan\u2019s Single Window system could provide a foundation for phased digital integration with regional partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
