A 14-year-old girl died during treatment on Wednesday after being critically injured when a school van caught fire following an accident in Murree a day earlier, Rescue 1122 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ayesha, who had suffered burns to 42% of her body, was initially taken to a hospital in Murree before being referred to Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi in critical condition. She died while undergoing treatment there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school van went off the road and caught fire on Tuesday morning, injuring children travelling in the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
District Police Officer Raza Tanveer Supra had said the incident occurred at around 7:15am after the vehicle apparently suffered brake failure, causing it to go out of control before catching fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The driver and local residents helped evacuate the children, while police and Rescue 1122 personnel shifted the injured to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DPO said brake failure was the initial assessment, but an inquiry committee was investigating the incident and would determine the final cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the DPO, the vehicle was carrying 12 people \u2014 two adults, including the driver and a helper, and 10 children from different age groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Suzuki Bolan\/Carry was a local arrangement made by parents to transport children from one village to three schools, including government and private institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four children with burns exceeding 25% had been referred to a burn unit in Rawalpindi, while two children had no significant injuries and six others had burns of less than 10%, according to the DPO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A preliminary report cited battery sparking as the reported cause of the fire and said the vehicle did not have a fire extinguisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report identified the vehicle as a 2006-model Suzuki Carry\/Bolan and recommended a detailed technical and mechanical inspection to establish the exact cause of the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police are treating the incident as an accident while also investigating whether negligence was involved, the DPO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Murree police have also directed traffic and district police to conduct joint inspections of school vans and public transport, with checks focusing on overloading, vehicle fitness, route permits, drivers\u2019 licences and unsafe gas cylinders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities said traffic officials issued 11,092 challans to 10,808 vehicles during August and September, with fines totalling Rs15.877 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inquiry into the Murree accident will continue, with final findings expected to establish the exact cause and whether negligence or any traffic violation contributed to the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
