Sukkur, Sindh: The Alternative Research Initiative (ARI), in collaboration with NARI Foundation Sukkur, organized awareness sessions under the theme \u201cQuit Smoking, Live Better \u2013 Make Pakistan Smoke-Free\u201d with women and girls and male smokers in rural and urban communities of District Sukkur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sessions focused on the harmful health, social and economic impacts of tobacco use and encouraged smokers to take practical steps towards quitting. Participants were also informed about the importance of protecting families, women and children from tobacco smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Anwar Mahar, Executive Director, NARI Foundation, said that smoking is not only an individual health issue but also affects families and communities. He emphasized the need for continuous awareness at the community level and encouraged smokers to seek proper guidance and support to quit smoking. He said that community-based awareness sessions can help people better understand the risks of tobacco use and the benefits of quitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Afshan Asghar, Chairperson, NARI Foundation Sukkur, highlighted the importance of involving women and girls in tobacco-control awareness. She said that women and children are also affected by tobacco smoke, particularly within households. She emphasized that families and communities should work together to promote smoke-free homes and healthier lifestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Abdul Waheed and Amjad Ali also shared their views during the session and emphasized the importance of providing practical information and support to smokers who want to quit. They encouraged community members to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
COMMUNITY PARTICIPANTS\u2019 VIEWS<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Female community participants Khanzadi, Shahzadi and Zakia appreciated the awareness session and said that it provided useful information about the harmful effects of smoking and second-hand smoke. They expressed that such sessions are important for women and girls because they help families understand how tobacco smoke can affect household members and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Male community participants Ali Sher Soomro, Waseem Ahmed and Dilsher said that the session helped them better understand the health risks associated with smoking and the difficulties involved in quitting. They appreciated the opportunity to openly discuss smoking and said that continued guidance and community support can encourage smokers to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ARI and NARI Foundation emphasized the importance of accessible awareness, community support and effective smoking cessation services to help reduce tobacco use and promote healthier communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
