NEW DELHI: India\u2019s political opposition dema\u00adnded the removal of the top election official on Wednesday after a newspaper investigation alle\u00adg\u00aded that decisions behind a contentious voter-roll revision may have been taken illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Election Commis\u00adsion of India (ECI) has been under scrutiny in rec\u00adent months over the nationwide revision that has struck millions of names from voter lists since last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ruling party says the revision aims to strike off fraudulently registered voters, but the opposition argues it is politically motivated and also targeting legitimate ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report by the Indian Express<\/em> focused on internal divisions within the three-member ECI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It said the body\u2019s chief, Gyanesh Kumar, overruled objections from the other two members at least 14 times during the past 10 months, leading to the removals of some 130 million voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Such overrulings may be unlawful because the commission is supposed to work based on the consensus of at least two members, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Congress accused Kumar of acting unilaterally at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s ruling BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIt was already known that things were not exactly well within the ECI,\u201d Congress party spok\u00adesman Pawan Khera said in a social media post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cBut just how messy, dysfunctional and, frankly, disturbing things had become is (now) laid bare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n K. C.
