Oil use \u200brose 20% in March, USDOT added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the US-Israeli war with Iran began, \u200bdisruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have \u2060roiled global oil markets. Surging jet oil prices have created \u200bthe air travel industry\u2019s biggest crisis since the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airlines spent $3.88 \u200bbillion in March 2025 on jet oil, far below the $5.06 billion they spent in March of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major US carriers have hiked air fares \u200band baggage fees, cutting some routes and making other cost \u200bcuts. Oil accounts for up to a quarter of airline operating expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultra-low cost \u200ccarrier \u2060Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations on Saturday, said this week it paid $100 million in additional oil costs in March and April.
