{"id":15914,"date":"2026-09-16T12:15:35","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T12:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=15914"},"modified":"2026-09-16T12:15:36","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T12:15:36","slug":"govt-plans-transformer-level-power-control-system-to-curb-electricity-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=15914","title":{"rendered":"Govt plans transformer-level power control system to curb electricity theft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New system to cover around 190,000 electricity transformers.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entire feeders no longer need shutdowns: power minister.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leghari says Regulatory framework expected by April or May.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The federal government has decided to introduce a new electricity management system that will allow power authorities to switch individual transformers on and off, Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to journalists at Parliament House, Leghari said the proposed system would eliminate the need to shut down entire feeders in areas where power theft is detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new mechanism, authorities would be able to disconnect only the transformer linked to theft or non-compliance, rather than affecting all consumers connected to a feeder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leghari described the initiative as a modern concept already being used in several countries and said the government was working on its implementation framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the regulatory framework for the new system was expected to be finalised by April or May next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister also rejected reports of additional electricity load-shedding in the country, maintaining that no extra outages were currently being carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commenting on net metering, Leghari said changes to the system had encouraged consumers to install battery storage solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said the government&#8217;s objective was to prevent the financial burden of a relatively small number of consumers from being shifted to the wider population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have stopped the burden of three to four lakh people from being placed on the remaining 35 million consumers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virtual grid system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Energy chaired by Muhammad Idrees, Leghari said the government was also preparing regulations for a virtual grid system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the system would allow people to generate and store their own electricity, adding that work on its regulatory framework had already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leghari said heavy investment was required to upgrade the power system and that approval for the required expenditure would be sought from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said applications for net metering were still being received in large numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leghari said the Petroleum Division was unable to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the government was using locally produced gas prudently in view of the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explaining load-shedding, the minister said consumers would otherwise have to bear an additional Rs6 per unit in their electricity bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PAK SOUCH MEDIA GROUP<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daily Pak Souch Newspaper Sukkur \u2013 Daily Pak Special Newspaper Karachi \u2013 Daily Pak Today Newspaper Karachi &#8211;
