She also congratulated him on his nomination on behalf of the party.

The nomination comes a day after the AJK Election Commission formally announced the schedule for the presidential election.

According to the AJK Election Commission, candidates will submit their nomination papers between 10am and noon on September 19, with scrutiny to be conducted the same day. They can withdraw their nominations by 11:30am on September 23.

Polling will take place at the AJK Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Muzaffarabad from 10am to 1pm on September 24, with counting to begin immediately afterwards.

AJK Chief Election Commissioner (retd) Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal will serve as the returning officer.

The election is being held to fill the office that has remained vacant since the death of former AJK president Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry in January.

Following his death, then-Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar served as acting president.

After Chaudhry Tariq Farooq was elected speaker on August 25, he assumed the additional responsibility of acting president.

PML-N has majority in Assembly

The PML-N’s nomination of Najeeb Naqi comes after the party emerged as the largest force in the newly constituted AJK Legislative Assembly following this year’s general election.

The party initially secured 25 general seats and subsequently strengthened its position through reserved seats and alliances.

Six of the eight reserved seats went to the PML-N, while two were won by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

The current AJK Legislative Assembly has 46 members, as elections to seven constituencies in Poonch and Sudhanoti have yet to be held.

The PML-N and its allies hold 32 seats, while the PPP has 14, according to figures reported during the formation of the new government.

The PML-N has already filled the other two principal constitutional offices. Chaudhry Tariq Farooq was elected speaker on August 25, while Barrister Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani was elected prime minister three days later after secured 30 votes against PPP candidate Sardar Mukhtar Ahmed Abbasi’s 14.

The election of the president will therefore complete the process of filling the three principal constitutional positions following the general election.

Najeeb Naqi’s nomination and his unheld constituency

Najeeb Naqi’s nomination also comes against the backdrop of the delayed elections in parts of Poonch and Sudhanoti.

The AJK Legislative Assembly currently has seven vacant general seats because elections in those constituencies have been postponed amid ongoing protests and security concerns.

Najeeb Naqi is from Sudhanoti and previously represented the area in the AJK Legislative Assembly. The AJK Assembly’s records list him among its former members from the Sudhanoti and Poonch region.

His nomination means the ruling party has chosen a politician whose native area is among those where the electoral process remains incomplete.

Who is Dr Najeeb Naqi?

Born in Rawalpindi on January 19, 1964, Najeeb Naqi belongs to a family with a long political association with AJK.

He studied at Aitchison College before obtaining an MBBS degree from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, in 1988. He entered politics after the death of his father, Colonel Muhammad Naqi Khan, in the early 1990s.

Najeeb Naqi went on to serve multiple terms as a member of the AJK Legislative Assembly and was also a member of the AJK Council from 2001 to 2006.

He served in a number of ministerial positions, including health, education, information technology, finance, planning and development.

He served as parliamentary secretary for health and planning and development between 1991 and 1996, as an opposition member from 1996 to 2001, and as a member of the Kashmir Council from 2001 to 2006.

He returned to the AJK Assembly in 2006 and later served again as an opposition member before becoming a minister in the 2016-21 period.

His political career has been closely associated with Sudhanoti. He is credited with playing a role in securing district status for Sudhanoti in 1995 and has remained involved in development projects in the area

During his tenure as health minister, Najeeb Naqi was also associated with the expansion of healthcare services in AJK.

In 2021, for example, he welcomed the inclusion of Sudhanoti’s population in the Sehat Insaf Card programme, under which thousands of families were to receive access to subsidised healthcare.

His grandfather, Khan Muhammad Khan, was a prominent political figure from Poonch and is remembered for his role in the region’s political and social affairs. His father, Colonel Muhammad Naqi Khan, was also an AJK politician and served as a minister.

Presidency follows formation of new government

The presidential election is the final major constitutional exercise following the August elections and subsequent formation of the PML-N-led government.

The party’s Iftikhar Gilani government took office after the PML-N secured a majority in the Assembly. Gilani’s election as prime minister marked the return of the PML-N to power in AJK after a decade.

With the PML-N holding a majority in the current assembly, the party has the numbers to support its presidential nominee, although the formal election will be conducted by the assembly in accordance with the AJK constitutional process.

PAK SOUCH MEDIA GROUP

Daily Pak Souch Newspaper Sukkur – Daily Pak Special Newspaper Karachi – Daily Pak Today Newspaper Karachi – Daily Pak Jazbo Newspaper Sukkur

Head Office : Ayub Gate Shaikh Muhalla Near Rabbania Masjid Sukkur

Karachi Office : Office No. 1901-B, 19th Floor Saima Trade Tower (B) Block I.I Chandigarh Road Near Jung Press, Shaheen Complex & National Museum of Pakistan Karachi Sindh Pakistan.

Contact : 03009319022

Website 1 : https://paksouch.com/
Website 2 : https://sindhi.paksouch.com/
Website 3 : https://pakjazbo.com/
Website 4 : https://urdu.pakjazbo.com/

MUZAFFARABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Dr Muhammad Najeeb Naqi Khan as its candidate for the slot of AJK president, ahead of the..

[3

post-15874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1.png",800,947,false
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1-150x150.png",150,150,true
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1-253x300.png",253,300,true
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1-768x909.png",768,909,true
https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1.png",800,947,false],"1536x1536":["https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1.png",800,947,false],"2048x2048":["https://paksouch.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Pak-Souch-Social-Media-Poster-30-1.png",800,947,false
admin
["GET
