LOS ANGELES: TV\u2019s horror comedy Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> emerged as the biggest winner at this year\u2019s Emmy Awards, collecting a record 14 trophies, including the prize for outstanding comedy series, while medical drama The Pitt<\/em> secured the top drama award for a second consecutive year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>, centred on a cursed New England town, edged out the final season of HBO Max\u2019s Hacks<\/em> to take the comedy crown on Monday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hacks<\/em> star Jean Smart claimed her fifth Emmy for playing veteran stand-up comedian Deborah Vance, adding another milestone to her decorated career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smart became the first actor to win the best comedy actress award for every season of a series\u2019 run. She thanked the creators of Hacks<\/em> while accepting the honour, saying: \u201cWhat a ride this has been!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The achievement places Smart ahead of most performers in the category. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won the comedy actress Emmy six times during the seven-season run of Veep<\/em>, is the closest comparable record-holder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew Rhys also made Emmy history by becoming the first performer to win two lead acting awards at the same ceremony. He was recognised for his performances in Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> and The Beast in Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The awards capped a competitive television season, with established favourites facing off against newer shows across the major comedy and drama categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions in tinsel town<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Emmys offered a rare night of celebration as Hollywood grapples with production cutbacks, anxiety over artificial intelligence and the proposed Paramount Skydance PSKY.O purchase of HBO owner Warner Bros. Discovery WBD.O, a deal that has divided the industry and faces legal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners largely avoided potentially divisive topics in their acceptance speeches and stuck to thanking their families and co-stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pitt<\/em> actor Noah Wyle said it felt \u201coverwhelming\u201d to land his second straight Emmy for playing Dr. \u201cRobby\u201d Robinavitch on the HBO Max medical drama set in a Pittsburgh trauma center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Describing himself as a \u201cHollywood kid,\u201d Wyle told the Emmy audience, \u201cThis is the only club I\u2019ve ever wanted to join. Thank you for accepting me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhys claimed awards for best comedy actor for Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> and for best actor in a limited series for the Netflix NFLX.O psychological thriller The Beast in Me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Welsh actor said he felt \u201cslightly giddy and a little bit dizzy\u201d to receive the honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the moment, I genuinely can\u2019t believe what\u2019s just happened,\u201d he told reporters backstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m from a small country, and I\u2019m glad we get moments to put our flag on the map and say we punch higher than our weight sometimes in Wales,\u201d Rhys added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other awards, Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> star Stephen Root upset favorite Harrison Ford of Shrinking<\/em> for best supporting actor in a comedy. Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> also claimed awards on Monday for supporting actress, directing and writing. Combined with technical and other awards handed out earlier this month, the show earned 14 Emmys, a record for a comedy in a single season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert<\/em>, which was canceled by CBS and aired its final episode this year, won best variety series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HBO Max murder mystery DTF St. Louis<\/em> won best limited series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best drama actress went to Rhea Seehorn, who plays a misanthropic woman at war with an unfailingly kind alien hive mind on Pluribus<\/em>, another win on a big night for Apple TV. Seehorn addressed her fellow nominees, including The Diplomat<\/em> star Keri Russell and Zendaya of Euphoria<\/em>, with a quote from the feminist activist Gloria Steinem, who died this month aged 92.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are linked, not ranked. I feel that way about all you women,\u201d Seehorn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emmy winners are chosen by the more than 27,000 writers, directors, performers, producers and craftspeople in the Television Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox honoured for his humanitarian efforts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The academy honored Michael J. Fox during the ceremony for his advocacy for Parkinson\u2019s disease research and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking from a wheelchair, Fox said support from Hollywood had allowed him to keep acting after his own diagnosis with Parkinson\u2019s. \u201cIt\u2019s because you stood up for me,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariska Hargitay, star of NBC\u2019s drama Law & Order: Special Victims \u200bUnit<\/em>, hosted the ceremony, breaking with a tradition of having a comedian serve as emcee. It was broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock CMCSA.O.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of pressure, but it is so reassuring to see so many familiar faces out there, and I\u2019m not just talking about how many of you I\u2019ve arrested on SVU<\/em>,\u201d Hargitay told the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one pre-recorded sketch, Hargitay\u2019s SVU<\/em> character, Olivia Benson, tried to piece together clues to determine if singer Taylor Swift, an Emmy nominee this year for a concert film, would attend the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swift made a surprise cameo in the bit as a rookie detective who pointed out that the singer\u2019s categories had been considered in a separate ceremony a week earlier. Benson correctly deduced that Swift would be in Kansas City watching her husband, Travis Kelce, play on Monday Night Football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
