ISLAMABAD:<\/strong> The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has so far expressed satisfaction with Pakistan\u2019s progress toward meeting the agreed targets under its economic programme, according to sources in the Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there is still no confirmation that the IMF mission will visit Pakistan this month for talks on the economic review required for the release of the next tranche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sources in the Ministry of Finance said that the arrival of the IMF mission has not yet been confirmed. As a result, the next round of discussions could potentially be held virtually instead of through an in-person visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the sources, the IMF is currently satisfied with Pakistan\u2019s performance on all major targets. One of the key reasons behind this positive assessment is Pakistan\u2019s recent issuance of bonds, which has helped strengthen the country\u2019s external financing position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the overall positive assessment, Pakistan could face difficult questions during the upcoming review, particularly over the growing circular debt in the power sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sources said that the increasing power-sector circular debt could become a major challenge for the government. The IMF is expected to closely examine the reasons behind the accumulation of circular debt and the steps being taken to control it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power sector has remained one of the major structural challenges for Pakistan\u2019s economy. Persistent financial losses, unpaid bills, transmission and distribution inefficiencies and other issues have contributed to the accumulation of circular debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is also required to reduce public-sector expenditure under its agreement with the IMF. Sources said the federal government has already started taking measures to reduce government spending and has issued a formal notification regarding the steps being taken in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming discussions are expected to cover Pakistan\u2019s performance against targets set for the period ending June 2026. The IMF will assess whether the country has fulfilled the agreed benchmarks and implemented the required economic reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to reviewing the targets already agreed upon, the IMF is expected to communicate new targets and conditions for the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The review is important for Pakistan because successful completion of the assessment would support the continuation of the IMF programme and facilitate the release of the next tranche of financial assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan has been working to improve its fiscal position, strengthen foreign exchange reserves, reduce economic imbalances and implement structural reforms under the IMF programme. The government has also been focusing on increasing revenues and controlling expenditures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF\u2019s current satisfaction provides some relief for the government, but the power-sector circular debt remains a potential area of concern. Any significant increase in circular debt could complicate the discussions and lead to additional questions from the Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government is therefore expected to demonstrate concrete progress in controlling energy-sector liabilities while maintaining discipline in public spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the IMF mission does not travel to Pakistan, the review could be conducted through virtual meetings between Pakistani authorities and IMF officials. The final format of the talks has not yet been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials are expected to continue discussions with the IMF regarding the targets achieved up to June 2026 as well as the economic policy framework for the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
