KARACHI:<\/strong> Hopes of finding significant evidence from the Apple Watch and iPhone of young businessman Mir Raza have diminished after the Punjab Forensic Science Agency was also unable to unlock his iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to investigative sources, the Punjab Forensic Laboratory has formally informed the investigation team in writing that it was unable to access the device. The Apple Watch and mobile phone are now expected to be returned to the investigation team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development is considered significant because investigators had hoped that digital evidence from the two devices could help shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigative sources said that some screenshots and messages were recovered from Mir Raza\u2019s Apple Watch. However, the material obtained so far has not been considered significant or useful to the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inability to unlock the iPhone means investigators have so far been unable to access potentially important data stored on the device. Such information could have included communications, photographs, applications, location-related data or other digital material relevant to the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two devices had previously been sent to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) on August 13 for examination. However, they were recalled by the investigation team on August 15 after Mir Raza\u2019s family raised concerns about the handling of the devices by the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the concerns expressed by the family, the investigation team subsequently sent the Apple Watch and iPhone to the Punjab Forensic Laboratory for further examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forensic laboratory has now formally responded to the investigation team, informing it that the iPhone could not be unlocked. The devices will consequently be returned to the investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development represents a setback for investigators who had hoped that digital evidence could provide additional clues in the Mir Raza case. The iPhone, in particular, was considered potentially important because of the amount of information that can be stored on modern smartphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the failure to access the iPhone, investigators were able to retrieve a limited amount of information from the Apple Watch. According to investigative sources, the recovered screenshots and messages have not yielded evidence considered important to the inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The handling of the devices has also been part of the broader scrutiny surrounding the investigation. The family\u2019s concerns about the NCCIA led the investigation team to recall the gadgets before subsequently forwarding them to the Punjab Forensic Laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest development comes as the Judicial Commission investigating the Mir Raza case continues to examine evidence collected by investigators. The investigation officer has submitted several important documents to the commission, including Mir Raza\u2019s post-mortem report, forensic reports concerning his smartwatch and mobile phone, and additional statements recorded from witnesses under Section 161 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions have also been raised before the commission regarding forensic evidence collected from Mir Raza\u2019s body and the time taken to deliver samples to the laboratory. Police surgeon Dr Samia told the commission that delays do not generally affect samples, although it may not be possible to determine whether certain chemical traces were lost as a result of a delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, the inability to unlock the iPhone means one potential source of digital evidence remains inaccessible. Unless investigators are able to obtain access through another forensic method, the information contained on the device may remain unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation team will now receive the Apple Watch and iPhone back from the Punjab Forensic Laboratory and decide on the next course of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the time being, the forensic examination has produced only limited information from the Apple Watch, while the iPhone remains inaccessible.
