KARACHI:<\/strong> The Judicial Commission investigating the Mir Raza case has directed that a notice be issued to Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the latest proceedings, Mir Raza\u2019s father and sister, along with police surgeon Dr Samia, appeared before the commission and responded to questions raised by its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advocate Jibran Nasir also raised questions regarding the handling of forensic samples collected from Mir Raza\u2019s body. He told the commission that the samples had been delivered to the laboratory after a delay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission subsequently asked whether such samples had a specific shelf life and whether a delay in transferring them to the laboratory could affect the reliability of forensic findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Samia explained that, generally, a delay does not necessarily make a difference. However, she said that if a particular chemical trace was not detected because of the delay, it would not be possible to determine whether it had disappeared as a result of the delayed testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that delays are generally avoided in high-profile cases because forensic evidence can be important in determining the circumstances surrounding a death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proceedings also saw an exchange between Advocate General Sindh and Jibran Nasir over the manner in which questions were being put before the commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Advocate General objected to questions being asked by Jibran Nasir, arguing that questions should be raised by the commission itself rather than by the lawyer representing the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission, however, questioned the basis of the objection and asked why the Sindh government would have an issue if the victim\u2019s family wanted to ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proceedings were subsequently affected by an intervention from the Advocate General Sindh. Following the intervention, the commission suspended the proceedings and directed that a notice be issued to Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development is significant because the commission is examining various aspects of the Mir Raza case, including the circumstances surrounding his death and the handling of evidence collected during the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forensic evidence discussed during the hearing is particularly important, as samples obtained from a deceased person can potentially provide information relevant to determining the cause and circumstances of death. The commission\u2019s questions about the timing of laboratory delivery indicate that the handling and preservation of evidence are among the issues being examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Samia\u2019s statement suggested that while delays do not automatically invalidate forensic samples, the possibility of losing certain chemical traces cannot be completely ruled out. Her remarks also highlighted the importance of timely processing in cases that attract significant public attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission is expected to examine the responses provided during the proceedings and consider the concerns raised by the family\u2019s legal representative. The notice to the Sindh home minister could bring further information or clarification from the provincial government regarding the matters under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mir Raza case has already involved the submission of additional documents to the Judicial Commission by the investigating officer. Questions have also been raised regarding digital and forensic evidence, including efforts to examine Mir Raza\u2019s iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the commission continuing its proceedings, the latest hearing has brought renewed focus on the collection, preservation and examination of forensic evidence, as well as on the roles of relevant provincial authorities in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further proceedings are expected to determine the next steps after the issuance of the notice to Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar and the examination of the evidence and testimony presented before the commission.
