Eight members of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Saturday rejected a proposed amendment to Rule 97-A of the Council rules under which there is a suggestion to keep proceedings of the Bar confidential as well as classified.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eight members also objected to the approval of the proposed amendment through a circular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The members were of the view that they had not been informed of the reasons for a change in the rule in a rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The members opined that changes such as the one proposed, which had far-reaching consequences, should be approved at a meeting rather than through a circular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They further said that the PBC was a legal and constitutional body of elected legal experts, and not a private club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The members demanded that proceedings of the Council should be transparent, and an exemption could only be granted in disciplinary matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, they said that the proposed amendment was a violation of Article 19 of the constitution, which guaranteed freedom of expression to citizens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
