{"id":14041,"date":"2026-09-03T11:33:31","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T11:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=14041"},"modified":"2026-09-03T11:33:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T11:33:32","slug":"world-in-danger-zone-un-says-el-nino-likely-to-intensify-may-become-strongest-ever-recorded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paksouch.com\/?p=14041","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;World in danger zone&#8217;: UN says El Nino likely to intensify, may become strongest ever recorded"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino could be the strongest since records began four decades ago, the United Nations\u2019 climate agency warned on Thursday, with the UN chief warning the world is in the \u201cdanger zone of extreme weather\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The naturally-occurring weather phenomenon is set to become \u201cvery strong\u201d in the months ahead and is near certain to persist through to February, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino warms surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, bringing worldwide changes in winds, pressure and rainfall patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf this trajectory continues, it may be stronger than anything since our monitoring began \u2014 so literally off the charts we have used for the past four decades,\u201d WMO chief Celeste Saulo told reporters in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/2ff896264b69c3eb28dd1681a66b0c35.safeframe.googlesyndication.com\/safeframe\/1-0-45\/html\/container.html\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino will peak towards the end of this year \u2014 though its knock-on impacts for the climate will continue well into 2027, said the WMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heat in the oceans releases more slowly into the atmosphere, pushing up global temperatures the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The powerful 2023-24 El Nino contributed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1884326\">2024 being the warmest year<\/a>&nbsp;on record, and \u201cwe should not be surprised if this record is broken\u201d, Saulo added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEl Nino is firmly established and will intensify into a very strong event in the coming months, with big impacts on rainfall and temperature patterns and associated risks of floods, drought and extreme heat,\u201d the WMO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino is a natural climate phenomenon and is not caused by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But scientists expect it will exacerbate the heat of a planet already warming from burning fossil fuels, while amping-up weather extremes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEl Nino is being supersized before our eyes,\u201d said UN chief Antonio Guterres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up. Sea surface temperatures are rising, temperatures keep climbing, and the world is in the danger zone of extreme weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2027183\/world-in-danger-zone-un-says-el-nino-likely-to-intensify-may-become-strongest-ever-recorded#massive-blow-to-economies\"><\/a>\u2018Massive blow\u2019 to economies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis exceptional El Nino \u2026 has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies across the world\u201d, said Saulo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are already seeing disruption and devastation from droughts and floods, and we expect these impacts to increase as El Nino intensifies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She put disaster management authorities and climate-sensitive sectors like agriculture, health, energy and water on notice, saying there was \u201cno time to lose\u201d in getting ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino typically takes place every two to seven years and lasts around nine to 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conditions oscillate between El Nino and its opposite La Nina, with neutral conditions in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFuelled by exceptionally warm ocean conditions across the tropical Pacific, El Nino is expected to strengthen further during the coming months to a very strong intensity,\u201d the WMO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN agency classifies El Nino events as weak, moderate, strong or very strong \u2014 meaning it is set to reach the highest level out of four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The WMO said there was an \u201cexceptionally high likelihood of nearly 100 per cent\u201d that El Nino will continue through to February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2027183\/world-in-danger-zone-un-says-el-nino-likely-to-intensify-may-become-strongest-ever-recorded#pacific-ocean-heating-up\"><\/a>Pacific Ocean heating up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El Nino can reshape weather and climate patterns thousands of kilometres away from the tropical Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every El Nino is different, but major events often follow familiar patterns.
