The fifth death anniversary of prominent Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani is being observed today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Geelani remained one of the prominent voices advocating the right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir. During his political career, he faced prolonged detention and imprisonment and continued to speak against Indian policies in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of occupied Jammu and Kashmir in 1972, 1977 and 1987 and later became a prominent leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the final 11 years of his life, Geelani remained under house arrest at his residence in Hyderpora, Srinagar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Syed Ali Geelani died on September 1, 2021, at the age of 91, while under house arrest. His death anniversary is being observed to remember his decades-long political struggle and his advocacy for Kashmiris\u2019 right to self-determination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
