KARACHI: The Sindh Cabinet has approved a comprehensive survey and mapping project for the province\u2019s Katcha (riverine) lands, allocating Rs705 million for the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The approval was granted during a provincial cabinet meeting for the project titled \u201cSurvey of Katcha Land in Sindh.\u201d The survey will be carried out by the Survey of Pakistan under a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to officials, the project aims to improve land administration, planning and revenue management across the province. The survey is expected to be completed within approximately 15.5 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Survey to Establish Land Boundaries<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cabinet was informed that an agreement between the Sindh Board of Revenue and the Survey of Pakistan was finalized in July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first phase of the project will focus on determining the boundaries and total area of K completion of the fieldwork and mapping process, the authorities will prepare final maps and comprehensive survey reports. These documents are expected to provideatcha lands. The process will include the use of satellite imagery, digital mapping and geodetic control to establish accurate geographical information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said land-use patterns will also be identified through geotagging, while the boundaries of different areas will be clearly marked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The survey is expected to provide the government with a more accurate picture of the province\u2019s riverine land, including its location, extent and current use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ownership and Land-Use Data to Be Collected<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of the project, data concerning land ownership and land use will also be collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After completion of the fieldwork and mapping process, the authorities will prepare final maps and comprehensive survey reports. These documents are expected to provide a detailed database that can support future decisions concerning land administration and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project will cover Katcha lands in four major divisions of Sindh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hyderabad Division
Sukkur Division
Larkana Division
Shaheed Benazirabad Division<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A total of 613 dehs across these four divisions will be included in the survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More Than 1.6 Million Acres<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sindh Cabinet was informed that the province has river systems and is subject to changing environmental and geographical conditions, officials approximately 1.61 million acres of Katcha land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because much of this land is located along river systems and is subject to changing environmental and geographical conditions, officials believe that accurate mapping can help improve its management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project is also expected to assist the government in identifying land-use patterns and establishing clearer information about ownership and boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Environmental Protection<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said comprehensive mapping of Katcha lands would also contribute to environmental protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accurate information about riverine areas could help authorities better manage natural habitats, monitor land use and develop policies aimed at protecting environmentally sensitive areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mapping initiative could also provide a stronger basis for planning in areas affected by seasonal flooding and changes in river channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By creating detailed and updated maps, the government intends to strengthen land governance and improve the management of one of Sindh\u2019s largest categories of riverine land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cabinet\u2019s approval of the Rs705 million project marks a significant step toward establishing a comprehensive land information system for Sindh\u2019s Katcha areas.
