The development marks a significant political move by the federal government as it considers changes in the provincial leadership.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sent a summary to the President of Pakistan for formal approval of the appointment. The governor of a province in Pakistan is appointed by the president, usually on the advice of the prime minister, so the final confirmation will come after the president’s consent.

The official statement added that the prime minister met with Nehal Hashmi and congratulated him on the proposed appointment as Governor of Sindh. The meeting was attended by several senior political figures, including Rana Sanaullah and Ishaq Dar, along with other leaders. During the meeting, discussions were reportedly held regarding administrative responsibilities and the political situation in the province.

Brief Overview of Nehal Hashmi’s Political Career

Nehal Hashmi, who belongs to Karachi, has been associated with the Pakistan Muslim League-N for several decades. Over the years, he has played various roles within the party and has remained a prominent figure in its organizational structure, particularly in Sindh.

Between 1997 and 1999, Hashmi served as an adviser on law and justice to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. During this period, the PML-N government was in power at the federal level, and Hashmi was considered part of the leadership circle that assisted the administration in legal and political matters.

In 2012, Nehal Hashmi served as the President of the PML-N’s Karachi chapter. At that time, the party was attempting to strengthen its organizational structure in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, which has historically been dominated by other political parties. Hashmi’s role was seen as important in organizing party workers and expanding its support base in the city.

Later, in August 2014, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the PML-N’s Sindh chapter. In this position, he continued working to promote the party’s political presence in the province and coordinated with local leaders and activists.

In 2015, Nehal Hashmi was elected as a Senator on a seat allocated to the province of Punjab by the PML-N. His election to the Senate reflected the party leadership’s confidence in him and gave him a national political platform.

Controversy and Party Expulsion

In 2017, Nehal Hashmi became the center of controversy due to a statement he made in connection with the Panama Papers case involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. His remarks were widely criticized and were interpreted as threatening certain individuals connected to the investigation.

Following the controversy, the PML-N leadership decided to expel him from the party. The move was intended to distance the party from his remarks and reduce political pressure at the time, as the Panama Papers case was already creating significant turmoil in Pakistan’s political environment.

However, after several years, the party restored his membership. In 2021, Nehal Hashmi was officially reinstated in the PML-N, indicating that the party leadership was willing to give him another opportunity to play a role within its ranks.

Current Governor of Sindh

It is important to note that the current Governor of Sindh is Kamran Khan Tessori, who is affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan. His appointment came as part of a political arrangement between coalition partners at the federal level.

If Nehal Hashmi’s appointment is approved by the president, it would mean that Kamran Khan Tessori would be replaced as the provincial governor. Such changes usually reflect shifting political strategies within the ruling coalition and efforts to adjust power-sharing arrangements among allied parties.

Political Significance

The possible appointment of Nehal Hashmi as Governor of Sindh carries political significance for several reasons. Sindh is one of Pakistan’s most politically important provinces, with Karachi serving as the country’s largest city and economic hub. The role of the governor, although largely ceremonial under Pakistan’s parliamentary system, still carries influence in administrative coordination and federal-provincial relations.

For the PML-N, placing one of its long-time members in this position could help strengthen the party’s presence in Sindh, where it has historically struggled to compete against stronger regional parties. It could also signal a shift in the balance of power within the ruling alliance.

However, the final decision will depend on the approval of the president. Once the summary sent by the prime minister is signed, the appointment would become official, and Nehal Hashmi would formally assume the role of Governor of Sindh.

Islamabad: A decision has reportedly been made to appoint Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nehal Hashmi as the new Governor of Sindh.
