Devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border region this week have killed at least 547 people, Nepal’s police said Friday. Chinese state media earlier confirmed five dead following Wednesday’s disaster, taking the total killed to at least 552.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 1,400 people are missing, including hundreds of foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US Geological Survey said the disaster — the deadliest for Nepal since a 2015 earthquake — was caused by a glacial collapse that triggered a vast flow of icy debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, Indian authorities recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, believed to be victims of the devastating floods, officials said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities are working to identify the bodies, and the seven bodies in India are not included in the overall toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Nepal issued a warning to move to higher ground after a dam upstream in Tibet was reported to have burst, two days after a glacial collapse caused deadly flooding. “Information has been received that a water dam has burst again on the Tibetan side,” police said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“All security personnel, rescue workers, and the general public deployed in rescue and relief operations are requested to remain alert and immediately move to a safe location\/report the incident.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China paused its rescue operation at the hardest-hit part of Tibet over renewed risks of flooding, state media said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A lake formed by immense piles of debris after a mudslide hit the China-Nepal border has begun overflowing towards the Gyirong border area where rescue teams were headed, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nepal’s disaster authority spokeswoman, Shanti Mahat, said an initial rise in water had been seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Information has been received that flow of muddy waters have increased slightly in the same area where there was a big flood, in Rasuwa’s Bhote Koshi river and there is a risk of further flooding,” said Mahat, who works for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Therefore, all those involved in rescue and relief work on the banks of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, and those who are in the risk area for various reasons are specially requested to exercise high alertness and immediately move to a safe place if they see any risk.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
China and Nepal warned of fresh flooding risks, complicating rescuers’ search Friday for more than 1,400 people missing after a deadly deluge and landslides swept away entire villages along their remote Himalayan border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency teams have recovered 392 bodies after a devastating tsunami-like wall of freezing water and mud wiped out towns under a torrent of sludge, burying homes, smashing bridges and dams and sweeping away vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many of the missing are foreign tourists, including trekkers in the Himalayan nation and scores of Hindu pilgrims to Tibet’s sacred snow-capped Mount Kailash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse that triggered a vast flow of icy debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Climate change is causing glaciers to melt worldwide, increasing the risks of glacial lake floods and glacial collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency teams were racing to pluck survivors from affected zones, while Nepali soldiers used sniffer dogs to search for bodies buried under the suffocating dirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But their efforts are hampered by fears of new floods as water trapped by the immense piles of debris blocking the valley risks surging out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chinese authorities warned that a lake formed by the Wednesday’s mudslide faces a “high risk of breaching and sending floodwaters downstream”, according to state media late Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kathmandu’s Flood Forecasting Division separately issued a “special notice”, warning of a growing lake behind debris left by the landslide and urging extreme caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nepali army helicopter rescue teams were working Friday to rescue around 100 people trapped inside a tunnel at a hydropower project swamped by a devastating flood two days earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our focus is in search and rescue of people… some people are trapped in the tunnel of Trishuli 3A hydropower project,” Nepal Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet told AFP. The prime minister’s office said in a statement that 350 people had been rescued from the area, but that 100 more were trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Thousands still missing –<\/strong> Kula Priya said she had lost everything when the deluge hit — including her eldest son, who is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I don’t care for wealth. I just want my son back. If any of you could rescue my son, please do it for me,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I don’t know where to go. We had three houses, all of which were washed away by the floods.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nepali police say they had recovered 469 bodies. A further 910 people, including 517 foreign tourists, are out of contact in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Beijing said 100 Chinese citizens — not accounted for in that tally — are also missing in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Indians make up the largest number of missing foreigners, while the United States said 90 of its citizens were out of contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Across the border in Tibet — where the only sources of information are Chinese authorities — officials say hundreds are missing and three have died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chinese authorities also said they had evacuated 555 stranded tourists — as well as 499 local residents –from Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Authorities have mobilised nearly 800 emergency workers, as well as sniffer dogs, speed boats, satellites and drones to help the rescue efforts, the state-run Xinhua new agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – ‘Inland tsunami’ –<\/strong> Shah told local authorities to “provide immediate relief to displaced families” and to open blocked roads, his office said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other foreigners out of contact include citizens from Australia, Britain, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa and South Korea, Nepal’s tourism board said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sudden rush of mud and debris was “like an inland tsunami”, travelling nearly 170 kilometres (105 miles) south into Nepal, said environmental historian Ruth Gamble, of Australia’s La Trobe University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile in India, said he would “pray for all those who have lost their lives”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n – Glacial collapse –<\/strong> “This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake,” it said, but the seismic recordings were analysed and it was found instead to be a “glacial collapse and debris flow”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scores of Hindu devotees from across the world are among the hundreds missing on the border, as many were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, on the Chinese side of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Logadarrsiny Raman, 26, from Malaysia, said her parents, aunt and uncle were on a pilgrimage but she lost contact with them after dawn on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Raman said the travel agency told her its last contact with the group of 17 Malaysians was at 8:18 am Nepal time, when they were travelling towards the Nepal-China border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The flood crashed into the area where they last were soon after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I’m very anxious,” she told AFP. “My only hope is to hear back from them that they are safe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Devastating floods on the Nepal-Tibet border region this week have killed at least 547 people, Nepal’s police said Friday.
