ISLAMABAD: A quarterly analysis of commercially available bottled water has found 29 out of 230 brands unfit for human consumption, according to a report on water quality monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) conducts regular quarterly monitoring of bottled water available in the market on the direction of the Government of Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the quarter covering April to June 2026, samples from 230 bottled-water brands were collected from 20 cities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The samples were examined in laboratories according to standards recommended by the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the laboratory findings, 29 brands failed to meet the required quality standards. Some samples were found to contain contamination that could make the water unsafe for drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The analysis found that nine brands contained excessive levels of sodium, exceeding the prescribed limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, four brands were found to have TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) levels above the permitted limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report also stated that 22 brands were contaminated with bacteria or other microorganisms, making them potentially hazardous for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Microbial contamination in drinking water can pose serious health risks, particularly for children, older people and individuals with weakened immune systems. Ensuring that bottled water is free from harmful microorganisms is therefore an important public-health requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The findings highlight concerns about the quality control of bottled drinking water available in the Pakistani market. Although bottled water is generally purchased with the expectation that it is safe and properly treated, laboratory testing can reveal problems that may not be visible to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quarterly monitoring programme is intended to identify brands that fail to meet prescribed standards and help relevant authorities take appropriate regulatory action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Representatives of some companies, however, have disputed the findings. They have maintained that their bottled-water products meet quality standards and said they would approach the relevant government authorities to have the record reviewed or corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report has once again raised questions about the need for effective monitoring of bottled-water companies and strict enforcement of quality standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Consumers generally cannot determine the microbiological or chemical quality of bottled water simply by looking at the packaging. Regular laboratory testing and regulatory oversight are therefore important for ensuring that commercially sold drinking water remains safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
